The Utah baseball team (9-5) is scheduled to compete against the
University of San Francisco, in San Francisco, Calif., Feb. 26-28.
The three-game series begins Fri., Feb. 26 at 2:00 p.m. Games are
also scheduled for Sat., Feb. 27 at 12:00 p.m. and Sun., Feb. 28 at
1:00 p.m. San Francisco is 4-6-1. In their last match-up in 1996, the
Utes won the series 2-1.
Utes to Watch
Senior Eric Wallace leads the Utes hitters with a .435 batting
average. The left fielder has ten hits, three doubles, three home
runs and eight RBIs. He has three stolen bases. Second baseman Adam
Castleton has a batting average of .364. The freshman has started 11
of the 13 games he has played and has 16 hits. He has four doubles,
one home run and nine RBIs. First baseman Ryan Johnerson leads the
team with 19 hits, six doubles and 17 RBIs. The senior has one
triple, two home runs and a .317 batting average. He is second on the
team in stolen bases with 7-7. Junior Brandon Page (2-0) heads the
pitching corps with a 1.80 ERA. In 114 batters faced, he has only
yielded 24 hits and nine runs. He is second on the team in strikeouts
with 18. Freshman Ryan Bailey (1-0) has a 2.08 ERA and two saves. In
five appearances (8.2 innings), he has pitched nine strikeouts.
Recent Results
In a three-game series versus Mesa State Feb. 19-21, Utah was 2-1.
The Utes dropped the first game 10-8 but won the last two 8-7 and
11-6. The series brings Utah's record to 9-5. In the opener, Mesa
State scored five runs in the first inning. The Utes came back in the
third when Ryan Hilts, Jared Larsen and Eric Wallace each homered and
Ryan Johnerson hit a triple. The Utes had eight runs on 14 hits with
one error. In the second game, Johnerson was 4-6 with two runs and
four RBIs including one home run. Wallace was 2-6 with two runs and
two RBIs. He had one double and one home run. Castleton was 3-6 with
one run and one double. Freshman Ryan Bailey picked up his first win
of the season, pitching three innings. He struck out five batters and
yielded one hit. Utah had eight runs on 15 hits with three errors.
In the final game, Wallace was 5-5 with two runs and four RBI's. The
senior hit two doubles and one home run. Over the weekend, Wallace
batted .500, slamming three home runs and four doubles in eight hits.
Third baseman Mike Goff was 3-5 with two runs and two RBIs. He had a
double and a home run. Senior Lance Ericksen (2-1) picked up his
second win in eight innings of work. He gave up 12 hits and five runs
and recorded eight strikeouts. The Utes had 11 runs on 14 hits and
two errors.
