LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Utah softball team split day one at the Troy Cox Softball Classic winning the opener against Wichita State 2-1, while No. 22 Minnesota upended the 30th ranked Utes, 8-5.
Sarah Farnworth shocked Wichita State on the mound and at the plate, whiffing six Shocker batters and surrendering only six hits, while providing her own run support with a solo blast into the seats in the third inning. Wichita State threatened in the fourth, but outfielder Molly McLean threw a Shocker base runner out at home plate to kill the rally attempt.
After knocking off two top-25 teams at the Fiesta Bowl tournament two weekend ago, the upset minded Utes shot themselves in the foot attempting to knock off the Gophers. Despite a Sunny Smith home run and a 2-3 performance from Jenny Monson, just off a hamstring injury, Utah committed three errors and gave up six unearned runs in the 8-5 loss.
Utah will play three games tomorrow in the tournament against Arkansas (2:00 p.m.), host New Mexico State (4:00 p.m.) and a game to be announced at 6:00 p.m.
