SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team defeated UNLV in a 9-8 victory today to wrap up a three-game series 2-1. The Utes scored nine runs on nine hits with five errors. UNLV had eight runs on 13 hits with three errors.
The win brings Utah to a 18-19 season record with a 6-10 Western Athletic Conference mark. UNLV is 21-24 and 10-8 in the WAC. UNLV jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first three innings.
In the first, the Rebels scored two runs on three hits with one Ute error. They added three more runs in the third on three hits and two Utah errors.
Utah came alive in the bottom of the third scoring six runs on five hits with one UNLV error. Freshman Adam Castleton slammed a home run over the left field fence to score three runs.
Utah led 6-5 through the next four innings before scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run home run by Jamie Hardy. UNLV came back to tie the score in the ninth, scoring three runs on two hits with one Utah error.
Utah's Mike Goff sealed the game for the Utes hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the tenth. The third baseman was 3-5 on the afternoon, also hitting a double.
Lance Ericksen pitched nine innings for the Utes. The senior delivered seven strikeouts. Sophomore Brandon Ballard earned the win, pitching one inning of scoreless relief.
