FORT COLLINS, Col. -- Utah split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Colorado State on Friday to open up a four-game series at Ram Field.
The third-place Utes (23-14) took the first game from the ninth-place Rams (17-17) in eight innings, 4-2. After falling behind 2-0, the Utes rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth. Amberly Johnson got on with a single and Sandy Rhea walked to open the inning. After Lisa Hashimoto moved the runners up one base with a sacrifice bunt, Nicole Wilkinson drove in the tying runs with a single.
In the top of the eighth, Wilkinson led off with a single and then was driven in with a double by Jenny Monson.
Sarah Farnworth pitched the entire eight innings to improve to 13-7. She struck out two and allowed two earned runs off of four hits.
Utah wasn't as fortunate in the night cap, losing 9-0 in five innings. The Utes were outhit 11-6 and committed three errors. Starter Jamie Wilkes was shelled for two runs in both the first and second innings and five more in the third. She fell to 4-2, giving up all 11 hits and nine runs (six earned) in three innings of work.
Kyla Kester improved to 6-5 with the win, pitching all five innings. All-American second baseman Jennifer Buford went 3-for-3 in the game with three runs and an RBI to lead the Rams.
Utah and Colorado State play another doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
