The Utah baseball team hosts UNLV, April 15-17 at Franklin Covey
Field in Salt Lake City, Utah. Thursday's game begins at 2:00 p.m.
Friday and Saturday's games are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The Utes are
16-18 with a 4-9 Western Athletic Conference record. UNLV is 20-22
with a 9-6 WAC mark. Last season, the Utes were 1-2 against the
Rebels.
Utes to Watch
Seniors Ryan Johnerson and Eric Wallace are tied for first on the
team with 10 home runs. Johnerson has a .385 batting average and
leads the Utes with 45 hits, 29 RBI and 13 stolen bases. He is tied
for fourth in the WAC in home runs and in home runs per game. Wallace
has a .324 batting average. He has 22 RBI and nine doubles. In WAC
rankings, he is tied with Johnerson for fourth in home runs and is
second in home runs per game. Ryan Hilts is second on the team in
hits with 43 and stolen bases with 10. The senior utility player has
a .297 batting average. Mike Goff leads the team with 12 doubles. The
third baseman has a .286 batting average. Freshman Adam Castleton is
second on the team with 11 doubles and six home runs. He is also tied
for second with 23 RBI. He has a .281 batting average and is third on
the team with 36 hits. Brandon Page leads the Ute pitching staff with
a 4.10 ERA. The junior is 5-2 and is tied for first on the team with
50 strike outs. He is second on the team with 63 2/3 innings pitched.
His ERA ranks him 13th in the WAC. Lance Ericksen is tied with Page
with 50 strike outs. The senior is 3-3 with a 5.22 ERA. He leads the
Utes in inning pitched (69.0) and complete games (3). He is third in
the WAC in complete games. Overall, the Utes are third in the WAC in
fielding (.962), seventh in pitching (6.45 ERA) and 10th in batting
(.277).
Recent Results
The Utah baseball team ended the weekend with a 7-6 victory over TCU.
The Utes were 1-2 against the Horned Frogs, also losing 10-6 and
17-1. The series brings Utah to a 16-18 record with a 4-9 Western
Athletic Conference mark. In the first game, the Utes jumped to a 4-0
lead in the top of the third. The Utes scored four runs on four hits,
including a two-run single by Eric Wallace. TCU scored one run in the
bottom of the third with back-to-back singles. They scored two
additional runs in the fourth on two singles and a pair of doubles.
Utah scored two runs in the top of the fifth on a double by Adam
Castleton who scored when freshman Nate Weese homered. The Horned
Frogs answered back scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of
the fifth. They added three runs in the seventh and one it the eighth
for the 10-6 victory. Utah's Jim Bolser (0-3) took the loss for the
Utes pitching 2 2/3 innings. Starter Brandon Page lasted four
innings. In the second game, the Utes had only three hits in a 17-1
loss. In the final game, the Utes took the Horned Frogs 7-6 in ten
innings. Utah scored the winning run when Weese was brought in on a
triple by senior Ryan Johnerson. With two outs in the 10th, Weese
reached first on an error by TCU. The Utes held the Horned Frogs in
the bottom of the 10th for the win. Ryan Hilts started Utah's
momentum with a double in the first inning. Castleton singled to
right field and Hilts scored on an error by the right fielder. The
Utes lost their 1-0 lead when TCU scored a run in both the second and
third innings, but came back to score four runs on three hits in the
top of the fifth on a single and two doubles. Jamie Hardy was 4-5
with two RBI and one double in the game . TCU scored one run in the
fifth. Utah added another run in the sixth on two hits and a walk.
TCU came back to tie the score with two runs in the seventh and one
in the bottom of the ninth forcing the extra inning. Starter Lance
Ericksen pitched five innings yielding six hits and striking out two.
Page earned the win in relief pitching two scoreless innings.
Overall, the Utes scored seven runs on 18 hits with one error. TCU
had six runs on 10 hits with two errors.
