The Utah (10-7) baseball team opens Western Athletic Conference play in a
three-game series versus San Diego State (10-9), March 5-7 in San Diego,
Calif. Friday and Saturday's games are scheduled to begin at 7:00
p.m. The final game is Sun., March 7 at 1:00 p.m. SDSU leads the all-time series between
the two schools by a 53-7 margin
Utes to Watch
Senior Ryan Johnerson leads the Utes in home runs (6), including four
round-trippers in the last series against San Francisco. He also has
seven doubles and 21 RBI. He is second on the team with a .361
batting average and leads the team with 23 runs scored. Johnerson is
8-8 in stolen bases. Freshman Adam Castleton is second on the team in
hits with 19. The infielder has a batting average of .322, with four
doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI. Leftfielder Eric Wallace has 13
hits and five home runs. He ranks third on the team with a .333
batting average. Brandon Page (2-0) leads the Ute pitching corps. The
junior has an ERA of 2.79. In six appearances he has pitched 29
innings, including one complete game, and recorded 20 strikeouts.
Senior Lance Ericksen (2-1) leads the Utes in strikeouts(23). He has
played 35 innings, one complete game and a 5.40 ERA to his credit. In
161 batters faced he has yielded only 39 hits.
Recent Results
The Utah baseball team went 1-2 againtSan Francisco last weekend. The
Utes lost 7-4 in the first game, came back to win the second 13-12
and lost the last game 14-11. Utah is 10-7 following the series. In
the first game, the Utes had four runs on eight hits with no errors.
Four of Utah's eight hits went for extra bases. Mike Goff hit a
double, Chrisman hit a triple and Wallace and Mike Wood each slammed
home runs. Pitcher Jim Bolser (0-2) took the loss for Utah. In the
second game, Utah team slipped past San Francisco 13-12 in a 10
inning contest. The Utes blasted four doubles and four home runs.
Overall, they had 13 runs on 14 hits with one error. The Utes battled
the Dons to a 12-12 tie following nine innings of play. Ute shortstop
Jake Shortino won the game for Utah when he slammed a solo home run
in the top of the 10th inning. Shortino was 1-3, scoring two runs and
one RBI. Freshman Castleton hit his second home run of the season and
went 2-6 with two RBI. First baseman Johnerson had one double and one
home run, his third home run of the season. Johnerson was 2-3 with
two runs and four RBI. Chrisman was 3-5 with four RBI. The
rightfielder hit one double and one homer un and scored two runs.
Jared Cavaness (1-0) pitched his first win of the season. In three
innings, he allowed one hit and struck out one batter. Brett
McDermaid started the game and lasted 6.1 innings. The senior faced
30 batters yielding 11 hits and striking out five batters. In the
final game, Utah jumped to an early lead scoring eight runs in the
first inning. Castleton brought in three runs on his third home run
of the season. Johnerson was 3-5 with three solo home runs, to bring
the senior's season tally to six. Shortino, Wallace, Chrisman and
Jared Larsen also hit home runs. Overall, the Utes scored 11 runs on
14 hits with three errors. Utah pounded six home runs and one triple.
