SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team was 3-1 in a four game series versus Pacific. Utah dropped the first game Friday 5-0, but swept a double header Saturday, winning 10-3 and 8-3. The Utes cleaned up the series with a 7-2 win over the Tigers in the final.
In the opener, the Utes had no runs on three hits and two errors. Senior Troy Beckman (1-2) played 4.1 innings with three strikeouts. Junior Sam Swenson hit the Utes only double and senior Ryan Hilts stole one base.
In the Utes second game, junior Brandon Page hurled a complete-game giving up only 10 hits and three runs. The score was tied 1-1 following the second inning, when the Utes surged for seven runs in the third. Third baseman Mike Goff hit a three-run double and Jake Shortino slammed a two-run home run, his first this season.
In the third game, Pacific led through the seventh inning when an error by Tiger catcher Kenny Garcia allowed senior Hilts to score the tying run and bringing the score to 3-3. The Utes scored five runs in the ninth inning to post the 8-3 victory. Pitcher Brett McDermaid (2-1) pitched a complete game yielding six hits and three runs, shutting down the Tigers final 19 batters.
In the final game, Lance Ericksen (1-1) continued the Utes streak of complete game pitchers when he took the Tigers for nine innings. The senior faced 33 batters, yielding six hits and two runs with two strikeouts. Freshman Adam Castleton slammed his first home run of the season as the first batter in the top of the fifth. The infielder was 2-3 and posting one sacrifice hit and one sac fly. First baseman Ryan Johnerson hit his fourth double of the season to post one RBI. The senior was 2-5 with two runs and one stolen base.
The wins boost Utah's record to 7-4 as they prepare for their next series versus Mesa State Feb. 19-20.
