SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team drops to 14-15, 2-7 in WAC play, after another one-run loss to New Mexico.
In a 12 inning contest, the Lobos defeated the Utes 4-3. Utah was 1-2 over the weekend, also taking a 9-8 win and a 6-7 loss. The first game was slow to start, with no runs scored until the top of the fourth when the Lobos scored one. Utah answered back with a solo home run by Ryan Johnerson, his eighth of the season. New Mexico scored again in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Aaron Sisk. Three Utah singles and two New Mexico errors brought in two runs in the sixth giving the Utes a 3-2 lead.
New Mexico reversed the lead in the seventh scoring five runs. With two outs, Utah gave up two doubles and a three-run home run taking the score to 7-3. The Ute defense shutout New Mexico's batters for the remaining two innings, but was only able to score three runs in the 6-7 loss. Utah scored six runs on 14 hits with two errors. The Lobos had seven runs on nine hits with three errors.
In the second game, the Lobos had a strong start scoring three runs in the first inning on a home run by Cory Robbins. Utah came up with one run in the first when senior Ryan Hilts scored on a New Mexico error. New Mexico increased their lead 6-1 in the top of the third inning, when they hit three singles and one double to bring in three runs. Utah bridged the gap with a two-run home run by freshman catcher Donald Hawes, his second of the season.
Both the Lobos and the Utes scored a run in the fifth and New Mexico added another in the sixth to lead the game 8-4. The Utes scored one run in the seventh on two singles and a sacrifice fly by Eric Wallace. In the bottom of the eighth, Utah loaded the bases with singles by Ryan Johnerson, Jed Chrisman and a walk by Mike Goff. With two outs, Hilts hit a three-run double to tie the game 8-8. Utah held the Lobos in the ninth, with two runners on base. The Utes clinched the win when Wallace doubled and was hit in on a single by Weese.
Utah had nine runs on 12 hits with no errors. Ryan Bailey claims the win for the Utes bringing his record to 3-0. In the final game, Utah lead 2-1 following the fourth inning. The Utes scored two runs on two Lobo errors and a sacrifice fly by Nate Weese. New Mexico took the lead scoring two runs in the fifth inning , but the Utes came back to tie the score with a solo home run by Johnerson, his ninth of the season and second in the series.
The Utes and the Lobos took it 3-3 into the 12th inning where New Mexico scored a run. Utah was unable to answer back, losing 4-3. The Utes had three runs on nine hits and one error. New Mexico had four runs, 10 hits and three errors.
