Long-time radio voice of Utah Athletics Bill Riley joined the athletics department as Director of Broadcasting in June of 2024 to play a key role in the Utes’ new initiative to self-produce digital game broadcasts on ESPN+ as part of its move to the Big 12 Conference.

Riley, who also serves as the play-by-play voice for Utah’s football and men’s basketball radio broadcasts on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM and hosts weekly coaches’ shows, is responsible for scheduling all play-by-play announcers and game analysts, including calling select games as the play-by-play voice. He also collaborates with the department’s broadcast production, digital and creative media, and communications teams in the planning, production and distribution of creative storytelling content for Utah’s ESPN+ digital broadcasts, as well as for the Utes’ digital and social media platforms.

The Utah Sports Broadcaster of the Year, as selected by the National Sports Media Association in 2012, 2015 and 2022, Riley has served as the radio voice of the Utes continuously since 2010. He also teaches a sports media class at the University of Utah, which he began in 2022.

The longest-tenured member of the ESPN 700 & 92.1 FM family at the time of his departure in 2024, Riley had worked at the station since 2004 in various roles, including mid-day radio host and program director. He began working in Utah’s radio and television market in 2001, and spanned more than three decades covering professional and collegiate sports in the Salt Lake market. He served as the play-by-play voice of the MLS Real Salt Lake for 18 years, initially on TV from its inception in 2005 to 2013, then as the radio voice.
A 1992 graduate of the University of Kansas, Riley’s early career saw work stops in Hastings, Neb., Moberly, Mo., Wichita, Kansas and Jacksonville, Fla. Riley is the proud father of two children: Son, Billy, who is a University of Utah graduate, and daughter, Katherine, who is currently a student at the U.
