Keith Embray returned to his alma mater in June 2022, and was promoted in June 2024 to the role of senior associate athletics director for belonging and student success. Embray, a 1992 Utah graduate who was a football team captain, all-conference and all-academic performer, was initially hired in a newly created position that had dual reporting roles with the university and the athletics department, serving the latter as associate athletics director for equity, diversity, inclusion and student belonging from 2022-24.
Embray came to Utah from Penn State University where he served as Assistant A.D. for Student-Athlete Welfare and Development.
Embray works in collaboration with university leaders to provide strategic leadership and oversight in the areas of belonging and student success, including developing resources and trainings for student-athletes and staff, advising various student-athlete and staff-led committees and leadership groups, assisting in developing best practices for recruiting, hiring and retaining staff.
The position was the first of its kind at the U and one of just a few at top-tier research universities and members of the American Association of Universities.
Embray brought more than 12 years of experience in student-athlete welfare and development to his new position at Utah in 2022 after overseeing Penn State's program for more than 800 student-athletes in 31 sports, from 2015-2022. Prior to Penn State, he worked at the University of Central Florida, the University of Notre Dame, and Westminster College. From 1998 to 2010, Embray worked as a project manager in human resources and management consulting at Yamagata & Associates in Salt Lake City. After excelling in football at Utah from 1990-91, Embray played professionally for seven years with stops in the Arena Football League, Canadian Football League and finally with the NFL's Tennessee Titans.
Embray earned his bachelor's degree from Utah in history with a minor in ethnic studies in 1992, and his master's degree in sociology with a social psychology emphasis in ’98. He received his MBA from Westminster College in ’09 with an entrepreneurial emphasis.
