Utah to return home on Wednesday after 1-0 defeat
FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Utah women's soccer team opened its Big 12 schedule with a tough assignment, taking on the No. 14 TCU Horned Frogs and the Utes suffered a 1-0 defeat on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.
Utah is now 5-4-1 in 2025 and 0-1 in conference competition.
"I'm really proud of our effort tonight," said coach Hideki Nakada. "TCU is one of the best teams in the country and I thought we went toe-to-toe with them. If not for their goalkeeper making a few phenomenal saves, the result could have been different.
"Ultimately, it came down to one mistake in our box that left a player open, which was unfortunate because I felt we defended them well throughout the match otherwise. We'll keep working to sharpen our play in the final third, as we were just inches away from scoring."
The Utes owned a 4-1 edge in shots through one half, but Seven Castain's 20th minute header was the only goal the first period yielded. The Utes were nearly the first team on the board when, in the eighth minute, Londyn Lovell stole a TCU throw-in just outside the 18 and soon found herself inside the box with the ball, but her right-footed effort was deflected away by the keeper.
Two more Utah opportunities presented themselves in the closing minutes of the half, when Sophie Bellini and Mia Paugh both sent in shots from just outside the box, but both were repelled by TCU's Olivia Geller.
Utah's excellent defense kept them within a goal in the second half, with keeper Erin Gibbs and her teammates turning away four on-target tries. Offensively, the Utes continued attempting to generate chances, logging five shots over the final 45 minutes. Their best opportunity came in the 76th minute, when Bella Woods served a corner kick into the box, but two Utah shots were blocked before the ball was cleared.
Another Utah attack in the 80th minute resulted in a cross from Ali Swensen finding Kelly Bullock at the top of the six-yard box, but Bullock's shot was deflected off-target.
