BREMERTON, Wash. – Senior
Braxton Watts put the team on his back with a stellar performance in Tuesday's second round of action as the University of Utah Men's Golf team ranks tied for seventh on the team leaderboard with just one round remaining in the Bremerton Regional at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
"The beauty of this group is that it's not necessarily the same player who will step up every day," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "We have five players who can all be
that guy. Today, Braxton stepped up and we needed him. We're only two strokes out of qualifying, so a good round tomorrow and we'll be just fine. We need more than one or two players to play well; we need all of our players. I'm confident that we'll come out and we'll have a better day."
Watts continued to put together another strong regionals performance, climbing 11 spots into a tie for third place. The senior opened play with back-to-back birdies to move 2-under right out of the gate, but a bogey on the ensuing hole moved Watts to 1-under. After six even marks to close out the front half, Watts tallied five birdies on the first six holes of the back half to launch up the rankings at 6-under. On the seventh hole of the course, Watts added a bogey but added another red mark on the final hole of the course to record a 6-under 66. The best score by any player in the tournament was a 7-under 65, just one stroke ahead of the Utah captain.
Gabriel Palacios began day two with seven even scores before recording a double bogey on the No. 17 hole to head into the front nine 2-over. A double bogey plagued the Ute on the first hole of the course before adding two more bogeys throughout the rest of the round. Palacios heads into the final round 3-over and in a tie for 29
