IRVING, Texas – Gabriel Palacios was named Big 12 Men's Golfer of the Month by the Big 12 Conference on Thursday, earning the award for the second straight month.
The sophomore from Guatemala City, Guatemala put together a strong four-tournament month of March with the Utes, including tying for first at The Goodwin to earn his second individual title of the season.
The month opened up with a trip to Scottsdale, Arizona for the Desert Mountain Collegiate where Palacios placed 13
th on the leaderboard, shooting 1-under. Palacios was one of two Utes to sit subpar for the tournament after hitting even through round two.
In the ensuing tournament, Palacios grabbed a top five finish at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate in Tucson as the sophomore saved his best round for last to shoot 2-under and in a tie for fourth place. Palacios shot 2-under during the final round to climb seven spots and trail the tournament winner, teammate
Brandon Robison, by just three strokes. It was the third top five placement of the season for the Utah golfer at the time.
In Utah's first appearance at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia, Palacios sat 1-over heading into the final day but tallied his best mark with a 1-under 71 to rank tied for 23
rd on the individual leaderboard. Palacios contributed to Utah's third tournament title of the season.
To round out the month, Palacios shined at The Goodwin at Stanford. The tournament consisted of 30 teams and 164 golfers, making it the largest tournament of the season for the Utes. The sophomore tallied two rounds under par, starting the tournament 2-under before following it up with an even score in the second round. With an intense individual title race on the course, Palacios shot a 3-under 67 across the final 18 holes to climb eight spots into a five-way tie for first place. The 5-under 205 performance secured Palacios' second individual title of the season and the second of his collegiate career.
Overall, Palacios tallied nine rounds with a score even or under par out of 12 for the month. In the NCAA rankings, the Ute started the month ranked No. 41 in the country and has since jumped six spots in the No. 35 slot.
Palacios first received the award after winning the John Burns Intercollege in Hawaii to start the spring season in February, notching his first collegiate individual title. He was the first ever Ute to win the award.
Palacios and the Utes are scheduled to compete in their final regular-season tournament before the Big 12 tournament takes place, hitting the links at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate in Phoenix, Arizona on April 11-12.
