CARLSBAD, Calif. – Senior
Braxton Watts posted a 5-over 77 third round mark at the NCAA Championships on Sunday which kept him out of reach of the tournament cutline into tomorrow's final round at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. With this result, the record-breaking Utah Men's Golf season comes to an end.
"Braxton started off really solidly he just couldn't quite convert his birdie opportunities," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "From there, he struggled with his driver on a few holes, and it cost him a number of strokes. Braxton has played in three NCAA Championships which is the most all time so I'm happy he was able to end his career here. I'm really proud of him and all that we accomplished this year."
Watts' day started on the back nine for the second consecutive round and opened play with three even marks before carding a bogey on the fourth hole of the day. Watts came back with three more even scores before finishing the back nine with back-to-back bogeys. Sitting 3-over with the final nine holes remaining, the senior began the front nine with another bogey before taking a hit on the ensuing hole with a double bogey. Following another even score, Watts responded with three straight birdies to capture his first red marks of the day but wrapped up play with two bogeys on the final two holes. The Ute turned in a 5-over 77 scorecard for the third round and finished 12-over for the tournament while in a tie for 108

Watts did not finish as one of the top nine individuals on a non-advancing team and therefore did not make the 54-hole cut. With this, the Utah Men's Golf season has officially concluded as the NCAA Championships continue on with the final round of stroke play before the top eight teams battle for the National Championship in match play.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS STRUCTURE
All 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket thereafter.
