TULSA, Okla. – The No. 14 University of Utah Men's Golf team had a hard time finding its swing during day one of the Big 12 Championships, shooting 34-over while finishing the day in 12
th place.
"Braxton played the best. He had a really solid first round, struggled a bit on the back but overall played well," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "For the rest of the team, we have a lot of work to do. There are 36 more holes and hopefully we play a lot better the next two days."
Watts opened the conference tournament with a birdie on the opening hole before tallying a pair of bogeys across the remainder of the front nine. The senior shined to begin the back nine, recording three red marks within the first five holes to sit 2-under. Across the final four holes of the first round, Watts hit two more bogeys to shoot even. In the second round, the Utah native had a hard time on the back nine of the second round, adding four bogeys on the final four holes before totaling three bogeys and a birdie on the front nine to shoot 6-over for the day and in a tie for 23
rd.
Gabriel Palacios began play with a few struggles, hitting a birdie to open the tournament before totaling five bogeys throughout the rest of the front nine to shoot 4-over. Onto the back nine, Palacios grabbed a bogey and a birdie to sit 4-over through round one. The second round started on the back nine as the sophomore tallied two bogeys within the first four holes. After eight consecutive even marks, Palacios hit a bogey on the fifth hole. To close the front nine, the sophomore drilled a birdie and a double bogey to conclude the day 8-over and tied for 34
th.
Sophomore
Sergio Jimenez also began the tournament on the right foot, hitting a birdie before evening out with a bogey five holes later to head even into the back nine. The back half caused some problems for Jimenez, forcing a double bogey on the opening hole before finishing the first round with three straight bogeys. Jimenez responded well in the second round, starting things off with seven consecutive even scores and a bogey to move into the front nine 1-over. Jimenez quickly evened out with a birdie on the second hole but captured back-to-back bogeys to move back over par. On the final four holes of the day, Jimenez tallied another birdie and a double bogey to finish 9-over and in a tie for 41
st, climbing 13 spots.
Davis Johnson shot 5-over in the first round before shooting 6-over in the second round to conclude day one 11-over in a tie for 52
nd.
Brandon Robison finished round one with a score of 7-over and put up the same figure in the second round with another 7-over to shoot 14-over for the day and in a tie for 65
th.

The Big 12 Championships will continue tomorrow with round three taking place at Southern Hills Golf Club. With today's showing, the Utes will tee off at 6:30 A.M. MT.
