THIS WEEK
The No. 10 Utah Men's Golf team is set to embark on its second tournament of the spring at the Desert Mountain Collegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona. After a sensational tournament at the John Burns Intercollege last month, the Utes are scheduled for four tournaments in the month of March. Utah is appearing in the annual Desert Mountain Collegiate for the first time since March 3, 2018. In its last appearance at the tournament, Utah finished tied for fifth while shooting a 15-over 879.
LAST TIME OUT
In their first tournament of the spring, the Utes put together a stellar performance at the John Burns Intercollege in Hawaii to snag a share of first place with UNLV for their third title this season. It's the first time in school history that Utah has claimed three tournament titles in one season after taking the Palouse Collegiate and The Tindall in the fall. The Utes recorded their best score at the tournament in the 25
th edition of competing there, shooting a 22-under 818. On the individual side,
Gabriel Palacios used a late burst to record his first ever collegiate crown, sinking a birdie on the final hole of the tournament to propel Utah and himself into a tie for first place.
Sergio Jimenez placed right behind the tournament leaders, finishing in third and just one stroke out of first place.
IN THE RANKS
The Utes have shot up the ranks over the course of the season as they moved into the No. 10 spot in the latest NCAA Scoreboard, tying the highest ranking in program history that they reached in the fall. The Utes are one of three Big 12 programs inside the top 10 alongside No. 3 Arizona State and No. 5 Oklahoma State. In the individual rankings, Jimenez ranks as the No. 10 men's college golfer in the country. The Spain native is tied for the most top 3 finishes in the top 10 rankings while posting the most rounds played. Jimenez is just one of three Big 12 golfers inside the top 10, alongside Arizona State's Josele Ballester at No. 2 and Oklahoma State's Ethan Fang at No. 6. In total, three Utes are ranked inside the top 100 as Palacios (No. 38) and
Brandon Robison (No. 74) join Jimenez.
THE FIELD
The Utes will hit the links with 16 other programs on the Outlaw Course, representing the lone team ranked inside the top 25. The field consists of host Michigan, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Grand Canyon, James Madison, Kansas, Kentucky, Lamar, Miami (Ohio), Minnesota, Mississippi State, Oral Roberts, Pacific, Southern Illinois, UTEP, and VCU.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
The Utes will turn to the same five golfers they have all season to compete at the Desert Mountain Collegiate.
Sergio Jimenez,
Gabriel Palacios,
Brandon Robison,
Davis Johnson, and
Braxton Watts round out the team lineup while
Peter Jung is set to compete as an individual.
COACHES THOUGHTS
"It will be good to get back out competing again," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "The team has had a few weeks off and now we will compete on one of the toughest courses on our spring schedule. We played the Outlaw Course during our team practice trip in January but it's a great test of golf and will be good for the team."
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The Outlaw Course stretches across 7,107 yards with par set at 72. The two-day tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. MST as the first day will include 36 holes while the final round will finish the final 18 holes on Sunday.
