IRVING, Texas—
Grace McCallum and
Avery Neff earned top recognition from the Big 12 after Saturday's championship meet for their outstanding seasons with the No. 4 Red Rocks.
McCallum was named the Big 12's Gymnast of the Year, while Neff received the league's Newcomer of the Year award.
Both gymnasts played pivotal roles for Utah Gymnastics in the all-around throughout the season, while collecting a stack of Big 12 weekly recognitions.
In McCallum's final regular season for the Red Rocks, she earned an all-around NQS of 39.605, which was best in the Big 12. McCallum was also dominant in single events with an NQS of 9.85 on vault, 9.955 on bars, 9.94 on beam, and 9.915 on floor.
McCallum ranks no lower than fifth on any event in the Big 12, and currently sits ranked No. 1 in the country on bars, tied for fourth on beam, tied 23 on floor, and No. 8 in the country in the all-around.
Utah's senior star has had a great week, earlier being named a finalist for the prestigious AAI Award on Wednesday.
Neff's path to end of season recognition was more difficult, suffering two severe ankle sprains on Jan. 17 against Iowa State that kept her out of competition for three meets.
Not to be denied, Neff made her return on bars against Arizona on Feb. 7, and two weeks later on Feb. 21, Neff added beam back to her lineup against Denver.
Utah's freshman phenom took another two weeks before making her return to the all-around against Washington on March 8.
Despite missing time, Neff has posted impressive scores in her return, earning an NQS of 9.84 on bars during the regular season, and recently posted a 39.675 in the all-around in only her second time competing all four events since her injury.
McCallum and Neff helped make a dent in the All-Big 12 honors earlier this week along with six of their fellow Red Rocks, to go along with their end of year recognitions.
