TUCSON, Ariz. – Brandon Robison earned his first ever collegiate title while leading the No. 10 University of Utah Men's Golf team to a third-place finish at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
"Really pumped for Brandon, he played amazing," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "The team played really solid overall. We were right there in the end and just made a few too many mistakes but another solid week by the boys. Brandon's second round yesterday was incredible. The second round the average score was 75.3 and Brandon shot 67 so that's amazing. For him to get his first win is awesome! We now have all five players in our starting line-up have won individually in the last calendar year. Gabriel's round today was outstanding. Overall, a great start to this trip."
In five of the seven tournaments this season, the Utes finished in third place or better. It's the fourth time this season that the Utes claimed an individual title as Robison joins
Sergio Jimenez (Palouse Collegiate),
Davis Johnson (The Tindall), and
Gabriel Palacios (John Burns Intercollegiate). On a tough course, Robison was just one of seven golfers to finish under par as all 13 teams shot over par for the tournament. The Utes ranked near the top the field in many statistical categories such as collecting the third most birdies (41) and the most eagles (3) while shooting second-best in par 3s (+10) and par 5s (-16).
Robison's day started off well to conclude the tournament, opening with four even marks before grabbing a birdie to move 1-under. Three holes later, the junior added another birdie to move into the back nine 2-under. Robison ran into some trouble early on the back half of the course, recording back-to-back bogeys to even his score. Four holes later, the Utah native bettered his score with another birdie to move 1-under. On the ensuing hole, Robison scored another bogey to finish the round even. For the tournament, Robison totaled 13 birdies which ranks third out of all 75 golfers. It's Robison's first collegiate individual title and his second top 5 placement of the season after ranking fifth at The Tindall in September.
Sophomore Palacios put together his best round of the tournament, grabbing three birdies within the first seven holes of the course to sit 3-under. Two holes into the back nine, Palacios tallied another birdie to sit 4-under. After a trio of even scores, the sophomore collected a pair of bogeys within the final four holes to move 2-under and tie for fourth place, just three strokes behind Robison. His third-round score was the second-best out of the entire field, just one stroke behind Washington State's Sam Renner (3-under). It's the third time this season Palacios finished inside the top 5.
Jimenez began the final round quickly a stroke over par as the sophomore started things off with a bogey but quickly leveled out with a birdie on the following hole. The remainder of the front nine consisted of even marks but another bogey on the sixth hole put the Spain native 1-over into the final nine holes. Jimenez started the back nine with six consecutive even marks before hitting back-to-back bogeys to move 3-over for the day and 6-over for all three rounds. The sophomore finished in a tie for 21
st overall.
Braxton Watts had a hard time finding his swing in Tucson, totaling six bogeys on the front nine before scoring a birdie on the opening hole of the back nine. The senior added six straight even scores before striking another bogey on the second to last hole and finishing 6-over for the day and 9-over for the tournament. Watts concluded the intercollegiate in a tie for 33
rd.
Redshirt junior
Davis Johnson opened up the day's play with three even marks before grabbing three bogeys and a birdie all in the back end of the front nine. Johnson then tallied a trio of bogeys on the back nine to shoot 5-over for the round and 10-over for both days of play. Johnson finished tied for 36
th on the individual leaderboard.
Individual freshman
