Utah Cleans Up in Season Opener

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team kicked off their 2025 season on home turf with back-to-back victories over Idaho State. The Utes edged out the Bengals 4-3 in the opening match and followed up with a commanding 4-0 sweep in the later slate.
MATCH ONE
The Utes faced early challenges in doubles, with Dylan Applegate and Gianluca Citadini falling to Idaho State's Lewie Bouman and Hayden Ciguenza, 6-3, on the No. 3 court. In the No. 1 spot, Reid Jarvis and Dante Teramo battled in a narrow loss in a tiebreak to Valentino De Pellegrin and Victor Sklenka, 7-6 (7-2) to give Idaho State the doubles point advantage.
On the No. 2 doubles court, Emmett Potter and Max Relic were locked in a tiebreak at 6-6 (2-2) when the match was left unfinished.
In singles action, Teramo secured the first victory for the Utes, dominating Quentin Lamothe 6-0, 6-1 on the No. 4 court. In the No. 5 spot, Jarvis followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sam Wensley. On court No. 2, Idaho State picked up a win.
Utah and ISU were locked at 2-2 in the overall match. Berk Bugarikj added another win for Utah in the No. 1 spot. Bugarikj defeated De Pellegrin 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Relic then clinched the match victory for the Utes with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 triumph over Jowan Rawson on the third court. The match played out and Idaho State snagged another win in the No. 6 spot for a final overall match score of 4-3 in favor of the Utes.
MATCH TWO
Utah started the second match off strong and displayed grit in doubles play, securing the crucial doubles point advantage with tightly contested matches. Idaho State claimed the victory at No.1 doubles. The Utes responded with Bugarikj and Calixto securing a 7-5 victory over Vujacic and Wensley on court No. 3. The doubles point was decided on court No. 2, where Potter and Relic clinched the advantage for Utah in a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak win over Bouman and Ciguenza.
The Utes continued the momentum in singles play starting with Potter's dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rawson at the No. 2 spot. Calixto followed up with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Ciguenza at No.5.
The match was decided at No. 4 where Jarvis secured a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Wensley.
Bugarikj was on track for another Ute victory, taking his first set 6-4 and leading 3-1 when his match was abandoned at the No. 1 spot. Teramo also had a solid start, winning 6-3 in set 1 but was trailing 2-3 at the time of his match's abandonment. Citadini won 6-4 in set 1 and was leading 4-1 when his match also went unfinished.
NEXT UP
The Utes are set to travel to Seattle, Wash. where they will face Washington (Jan. 31), North Florida (Feb. 1), and Portland (Feb. 2).
