SALT LAKE CITY – Following two weekends with successes, the University of Utah swim and dive program will travel to Dallas to take on the Southern Methodist University Mustangs and the University of Pittsburgh Panthers for a two-day meet at the Robson and Lindley Aquatics Center in Dallas starting on Friday.
After hosting CMU, UCLA, UCSB and Denver, this will be the first travel meet of the new year for most of the team.
"This should be a very fun, exciting and competitive meet," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "In my time at Utah, we've never raced SMU or Pitt, so it's going to be a lot of fun. They're teams from a different conference, in a new pool and an exciting format. All of that should equal some fast swimming and great diving."
Previously in the pool
- Against Denver, sophomore Caleb Gallagher tallied his first two career golds, one in the 100-yard breaststroke and a second in the 200-breast.
- Senior Norah Hay marked her named next to four different races and earned a gold in as many swims. Taking an individual first in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-back, but helping the team to the top on the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard free relay.
- Junior Julia Bartell finished in first in three races, the 50-yard free, 100-yard butterfly and the 400-yard medley relay.
- Freshman Owen Carlsen earned two top spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 500-free.
- Isabella Riso, Erin Palmer, Norah Hay and Lily Milner broke a 17-year-old record in the 400-freestyle relay, setting a new program high of 1:18.65 during their midseason at Texas A&M.
- The Utes have earned 18 NCAA B-cuts, 14 on the men's side, four on the women's.
- At their midseason invitational, the Utah swimmers earned 98 personal bests and ten spots on the top-10 times list.
"We don't have dual meet opportunities like this often, where we travel to a high-level opponent and facility, so it'll be a nice chance for us to just go out and compete," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "Both SMU and Pitt regularly send divers to NCAAs and are two of the top diving squads in the ACC, so getting a chance to dive against them is an opportunity to continue to prove ourselves nationally."
Last time on the boards
- Junior Kathryn Grant earned a silver, a bronze and a top four finish at the Cal Diving Invitational, her best showing came on one-meter finishing with a final score of 300.55.
- Senior Holly Waxman snagged a gold on 1m and two top six finishes.
- Junior Elias Petersen wracked in medals, finishing with two silvers from 1m and 3m.
- Both men and women's teams earned a gold in the team event. The women's team consisted of Grant, Waxman and freshman Callie Eaglestone, while the Petersen, graduate Jesco Helling and freshman Attila Bernatsky competed for the men.
Waxman's a Winner
Holly Waxman earned her first Big 12 weekly award after smashing the Auburn Diving Invite. Winning the prelims on both springboards, but earning two silver medals and a top-12 spot in the platform finals, Waxman stood out. Beating competitors from Florida State, George Washington and Tennessee, she was the sole owner of the highest 12-dive list on both springboard events.
Callie Calls for Celebration
After her performance at the Texas Diving Invitational, the freshman was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. In her first career invitational, the United Kingdom native earned a place in the 1m final competition, beating out competition from Texas, Stanford, Texas A&M and TCU for a top-12 finish. Her efforts added 12 points to the women's overall score, helping push them into a second-place finish.
Elias Tops Big 12
Petersen earned the first Big 12 weekly award for the swim and dive program after the junior's showing at the home opener against UNLV. Scoring 393.15 on just three dives, the Malmo, Sweden native easily topped the 1m event and came within one point of the school record on the same event. He followed that with a second victory on 3m, earning 376.73.
Lambert Lights Up
During midseason, freshman
Jones Lambert scratched his name into the Utah top-10 times record book with three different races. Finishing second in the 500-yard freestyle, fifth in the 200-free and fourth in the 1650-free, Lambert was the second-highest point-earner on Utah, accumulating 46 points.
