LUBBOCK, Texas - The University of Utah women's soccer program had their first Big 12 loss to defending champions, the Texas Tech Raiders, 2-0, on Thursday night at the John Watkins Soccer Complex in Lubbock, Texas.
This is the first meeting between the Utes, 4-3-2 (1-1, Big 12) and the Red Raiders, 6-2-1 (1-0-1, Big 12) since 2016 and the first meeting between the schools on Texas turf.
"Really proud of our effort tonight," said head coach
Hideki Nakada. "Texas Tech has us on our heels in the first half, but I thought with the adjustment we made at the half allowed us to be in control more in the second half."
A slow start on the pitch as both teams came into the first half focusing on defense. The strong efforts led to neither team finding the net and going in to halftime level at 0-0.
In the 62nd minute, junior goalkeeper
Kasey Wardle saved three Tech attempts. The third save was a high shot from Tech, but Wardle was able to save it with a jump and a high right-handed punch. Wardle would go on to have two more saves, tallying five for the match.
"In these tight games, it often comes down to one moment and we made a critical error, which led to their goal and that was the difference," said Nakada.
After multiple crossbar shots from both Utah and Texas Tech, the Red Raiders were able to find the net in the 70th minute thanks to a goal from Skylar Haase, creating a 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later, Chloe Soto gets a cross in the goalie box and tries to head it in and Wardle punches it out, but Haase headed the reflection of the ball back into the net. This bumped the Texas Tech lead to 2-0.
With ten minutes left on the clock, the Utes' offense worked hard to close the deficit, but were unable and the clock ran out with the Raiders up 2-0.
"We will move on quickly from this and get ready for Monday," said Nakada.
