HEAR FROM THE UTES
Head Coach Lynne Roberts
Opening statements
"I want to give credit to Arizona State. They came to compete and they played really hard. They definitely didn't make it easy on us. The first half we were kind of sputtering. We weren't executing offensively and had too many turnovers. We have to clean that up and fast. Teams never make it easy on Alissa [Pili] but she rebounded with authority tonight which was huge for us defensively. She was double teamed and put up 20 points despite it being physical. Ines [Vieira] is the engine that makes us go and even with two fouls for 18 minutes in the first half I trust her. We move on now. We have UCLA next and the last time we played them we did not play well. I am looking forward to playing better tomorrow night."
On Ines Vieira 's half court shot . . .
"Those are momentum shots. We do a shooting drill in practice where they have to hit a half court shot. I don't think she's hit one all year but she saved it for today. It was a big momentum play and drew our fans back into the game. It's nice to go into a timeout with momentum."
On the toughness of the Pac-12 . . .
"This league is a gauntlet. I've been saying that all year long. The game tonight showed how tough it is. This is my ninth season in the Pac-12 and this is the best it's ever been. Every game we play every weekend throughout the season is like an NCAA Tournament game. This league makes fools of us all at some point. The coaching is elite, the players are unbelievable. It's disappointing it's going away but it's been an honor to be a part of and coach in this league."
On looking forward to UCLA . . .
"Well from the last game we have a lot of adjustments to do. I think UCLA is a complete team, from one through five. Cori Close does a tremendous job and they're playing at a really elite level right now. We'll have a game plan ready and be ready to roll tomorrow night."
#35, Alissa Pili, forward
On her adjustments throughout the game. . .
"When teams key in on me like that I try to be a big distributor to my teammates. I try to set good screens to open the lanes for my teammates. I try to rebound and play hard in the moments too. I try to control what I can control. I may not be scoring as much but I trust in my teammates and the process and let the game come to me."
#2, Ines Vieira, guard
On her half court shot . . .
"At first I was surprised. Sometimes I just throw the ball and hope it goes in and when I saw it hit I was just happy for the team."
