SALT LAKE CITY – After concluding the regular season with a dramatic home victory over the USC Trojans on Feb. 17, the University of Utah men's swimming team will be looking to carry that momentum into their first postseason meet of 2024, the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships, which will be held from Wednesday through Saturday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Coach
Jonas Persson's crew will be attempting to improve on their strong showing at the 2023 Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships, which included posting 16 times that ranked in the top 10 in program history, smashing three Utah records and collecting a pair of medals.
"They are very excited and they're ready to go," said Persson of his male swimmers. "It's been a good season so far and the guys have gotten better through every meet throughout the year and gotten more focused as we've gone along. We got through the season and they're just excited and ready to swim fast and show people what they're made of and that's what we want."
Three of those top 10 times were put up by
Brandon Miller, who posted new marks in the Utah record book in the 200 back, 400 IM and 500 free.
Jaek Horner broke the school record in the 100 breast, which he has since shattered again, and collected a medal in the 200 medley relay.
Baylor Lewis also added personal bests to his team's record book in the 400 IM and 100 breast.
So far in 2023-24, Horner's racked up a team-high 11 victories, leading the way for a squad that's had 14 swimmers come out on top at least once. Horner has been at his best in the breaststroke and two of his triumphs in the 100 breast came against Pac-12 rivals, first at the expense of Arizona on Oct. 27 and again during the Utes' clash with USC on Feb. 17.
Miller will also be back in action in Washington after a seven-win regular season and five of those victories came in his squad's last three competitions. He bested the field in three events against Wyoming on Jan. 19 and he beat competitors from BYU and USC in the 200 back on Feb. 10 and 17, respectively. The North Carolina native has posted three new top 10 times during the 2023-24 campaign as well.
