STANFORD, Calif. –
Abby Dayton and
Kaylah Nelsen produced five total hits, but the University of Utah softball team ended up suffering a 5-3 defeat to the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal on Friday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at Boyd and Jill Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
The Utes now have a record of 17-12 overall and are 1-6 in Pac-12 competition, while the Cardinal are 4-0 in league play and 23-5 overall.
The Utes got off to a fast start, putting up two runs in the first inning thanks to a rally started by Dayton and Nelsen. The former got the day started by poking a single into left, then the latter drove a double into the left field corner, sending Dayton across to make the score 1-0. Two batters later, with Nelsen on third,
Sophie Jacquez served an RBI single into left to double Utah's advantage.
The Cardinal got one run back in the first on a bases-loaded walk before leapfrogging ahead by scoring twice in the third. Utah found a response in the fourth, however, when
Haley Denning and
Aliya Belarde started the frame with singles and
Chloe Doyle dumped a base hit of her own into right, plating Denning with the game-tying run.
Unfortunately for the Utes, that would be the last run they would score. Stanford regained the lead in their half of the fourth and added one more in fifth. Consecutive knocks by Dayton and Nelsen did allow the visitors to bring up the go-ahead run in the seventh, but a popup to second ended the evening.
Utah's nine hits are the most Stanford started NiJaree Canady has allowed in a game all season.
