SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the USC Trojans on Friday night in both teams' 2023 Pac-12 opener at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
The Utes' record falls to 4-3-3 and they are 0-1 in league competition, while the Trojans are 1-0 in the conference and 5-2 overall.
"I'm extremely disappointed in tonight's result," said head coach
Hideki Nakada. "I thought we had some great moments and we were the better team between the 18s, but ultimately, if you are not threatening enough inside the 18, it doesn't mean anything. USC was clinical and put away their chances and we didn't. We will regroup and look to give a better effort in the final third next week."
Both teams ended the night with 12 total shots, the Utes owning a 5-3 edge in the first period, followed by the Trojans outshooting their hosts 9-7 in the second half.
Kelly Bullock led the home team with four attempts on goal, while
Courtney Brown,
Lilliah Blum and
Katie O'Kane each registered two. In goal,
Evelyn Vitali made three saves.
The Trojans wasted little time getting on the board, scoring on their first shot of the game. Following a USC throw-in on the Utah side of the field, a pass from Zoe Burns on the top right side of the box found Kayla Colbert in front of the net and Colbert's left-footed shot slid inside the right post for the game's first goal in the eighth minute.
Three of the next four tries on goal came from the Utes, including a shot from the left side of the box by
Alex Schoenstadt that came within inches of crossing the line for the equalizer. Unfortunately for the home side, however, it was the visitors who tallied the next goal.
USC doubled its lead when a pass from Keely Roy found Zoe Burns charging towards the Utah goal and Burns shot ended up in the back of the net to make the score 2-0 in the 38th minute. Bullock put one more shot on goal for the 43rd minute, but a Hannah Dickinson save prevented Utah from cutting into the deficit.
The Utes continued trying to solve USC's defense in the final frame and they nearly succeeded on multiple occasions. After a Bullock effort was saved in the 79th minute, Blum put a header on frame moments later, only for Dickinson to be in perfect position for the stop. One last try from Brown, who sent a rocket towards the goal in the 87th minute, was also stopped to keep the score frozen until the final whistle.
