Team White defeats team red, 240.5 – 190.5
SALT LAKE CITY – Team white piled up 16 victories, including two by Summer Stanfield, and earned a 240.5 – 190.5 victory over team red in the University of Utah swimming and diving team's intrasquad meet, which was held inside the Ute Natatorium on Friday.
"I'm really happy with the meet today," said head coach Jonas Persson. "We had great energy and our wonderful team culture really showed. The performances were a mix, but there were a lot of swims that I'm super pleased with. It was a great start to the season."
The white team got off to a fast start by winning seven of the first eight races, including both of the opening relays. Emma Lemler, Erin Palmer, Maddie Woznick and Reagan Cathcart teamed up to take the women's 200 medley relay, while the men's medley relay was won by Nick Mason, Landon Alarcon, Holden Ellsworth and Nathan Ramey.
Molly Jacobson scooped up another triumph for the white team in the women's 200 free, followed by Nick Chirafisi picking up the red team's first W in the men's 200 free. The next four events went to the white squad, however, with Woznick, Will Woodall, Stanfield and Kelson Flynn all grabbing wins.
The first diving event was the 1m and Emilia Nilsson Garip, representing the red team, posted the top women's score, while team white's Elias Petersen had the highest point total in the men's competition.
Another Stanfield victory, this one in the 100 fly, added to the white team's point total, but Marko Kovacic grabbed the top spot in the men's 100 fly for team red. First place women's 100 free went to Palmer, followed by a red team win courtesy of Evan VanBrocklin in the men's 100 free. Team red received another victorious performance from Norah Hay in the women's 100 back and Parker McOmber won the men's 100 back for team white. The sides continued to trade victories, with Abby Pope and Jaek Horner coming out on top for the red team and Tomas Chocholaty and Krystal Lieu logged wins for the white squad.
Utah's divers went back to work in the 3m and Kathryn Grant from team white recorded the highest score in the women's event, then Peterson secured first place on the men's side.
The day finished with Woznick, Cathcart, Lemler and Sofia Carlson capturing the women's 400 free relay for the white team and Chirafisi, Kovacic, Jackson Kehler and VanBrocklin winning the men's 400 free relay for the red team.
