SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a spirited defensive effort in which the University of Utah women's soccer team limited the No. 19 Clemson Tigers to their lowest shot total of the season, the Utes suffered a 1-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
This first loss of the 2023 campaign puts Utah's record at 2-1-1, while Clemson improves to 3-0-1.
"Today was a tough result against a very good Clemson team," said head coach
Hideki Nakada. "I thought both teams defended well throughout the match and it came down to one team putting away limited opportunities. Clemson took advantage of their one clear chance and we didn't.
"We are disappointed in today's result but it's still early and we've shown that we can compete with top teams. I am excited for this group to continue to grow this season."
Defense was story of the first half, with only five combined shots between the two sides and only one on-target try. Clemson fended off an early Ute chance in the form of a corner kick in the sixth minute, while the Utah back line held strong against consecutive Tiger corners in the 23rd minute. When a last-minute shot from
Maryn Granger sailed over the goal, the Utes and Tigers headed to the half even.
The Tigers struck for the match's only goal early in the second half. Clemson's Sam Meredith took a pass from Sydney Minarik and carried the ball into the right side of the 18-yard box. Meredith's shot was blocked, but the ball caromed to Makenna Morris, who knocked it over the line to break the scoreless draw in the 51st minute.
The Utes spent the rest of the match pushing for the equalizer, but they were never able to find the back of the net. Their best chance came in the 73rd minute and started with a run into the left side of the box by
Courtney Brown. Brown's cross found
Taliana Kaufusi in front of the goal, but Kaufusi's shot went wide. Another try from Kaufusi was deflected off target in the 85th minute and an attempt from
Courtney Brown that was saved in the 86th minute represented Utah's last opportunity to tie the score.
The visitors ended the day with a 10-5 edge in shots, but also committed twice as many fouls as their hosts. Kaufusi collected a pair of shots on goal to lead the Utes, while goalkeeper
Kasey Wardle was credited with three saves.
