TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 4/5 Utah Utes secured a first round bye in the Pac-12 tournament with a 74-69 win over Arizona State on Sunday afternoon.
Utah advances to 23-3 overall and 13-3 in the Pac-12. Arizona State now sits at 7-18 overall and 0-16 in Pac-12 action.
The Sun Devils got an early 9-0 jump on the Utes. In the final minute of the first quarter, Ines Viera knocked down a three and Gianna Kneepkens went to the hoop for a tough layup to end the quarter with a 23-16 score. Utah had some work to do after a slow offensive start.
Utah started the second quarter with some momentum and strung together a 10-0 run. Kneepkens hit a three to end the run and to give Utah their first lead of the game. As the first half ended, Utah had a 31-29 lead.
The Sun Devils started the second half on a 6-0 run. The Utes then answered with a 7-0 run. The two teams matched each other the rest of the quarter but Utah managed to pull ahead for a narrow 52-51 lead going into the final 10 minutes of action.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle. Utah was able to knock down nine free throws in the final 90 seconds of the game to pull ahead for a 74-69 victory.
LEADERS Utah had two Utes score in double figures and were led by Gianna Kneepkens who put up 22 points and Jenna Johnson added 15 points. Peyton McFarland was a big contributor for Utah and was just short of a double-double with nine points and a Utes' game high nine rebounds. Issy Palmer also added nine points for Utah.
COMPARISON Utah ended the game shooting 44 percent from the field, 28 percent from beyond the arc, and 72 percent from the free throw line. Utah ended the game with 14 assists.
Arizona State finished the game shooting 35 percent from the field, 31 from the three and 65 from the line.
The Utes outrebounded the Sun Devils 47-41. Utah had 34 points in the paint while Arizona State had 30. Utah also outscored ASU 14-9 on fastbreak points.
UP NEXT Utah is set to host the final home games of the regular season with Cal on Thursday, Feb. 23 and Stanford Saturday, Feb. 25.
