ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Utah women's tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA Kickoff Weekend Sunday morning and fell to Ole Miss in the consolation round, 0-4, at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Courts. Following the pair of matches at the ITA Kickoff, the Utes are now 5-2 overall on the year.
"Obviously, not the result we wanted today to close out the weekend," said head coach Ric Mortera. "This is going to be an important couple of weeks for us to train and make the necessary adjustments to be successful in the next part of our season."
In doubles, Ole Miss took the victory on court two to put pressure on the Utes, but the No. 24-ranked duo of Whitney Hekking and Madison Tattini rallied back on court one, downing Sabina Machalova and Alexa Bortles, 6-4. In a match that went back-and-forth throughout the entire set, Utah's No. 3s couldn't pull off the win and fell 7-5 to see Ole Miss take the early 1-0 lead.
Utah held the same singles lineup from yesterday's match that took No. 12-ranked UCF down to the wire, but Ole Miss came out strong in singles and immediately took charge on multiple courts. On court four, Lindsay Hung fell to Anna Vrbenska 1-6, 1-6, and shortly after Tattini dropped her match to Sabina Machalova with the same scores in the No. 1 position.
Ole Miss clinched the match from the victory on court three where Tereza Janatova defeated Hekking 6-2, 6-3, giving the Rebels the 4-0 win over Utah on Sunday.
The Utah women's tennis team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15, as they will travel to Irvine, Calif., to take on UC Irvine. The match against the Anteaters is set to start at 12 p.m. MT. The Utes will then wrap up their road trip in Los Angeles when they take on Loyola Marymount at 12 p.m. MT on Sunday, Feb. 16 to close out the weekend.
