SALT LAKE CITY – In the first two matches of the season, the University of Utah women's tennis team opened in dominant fashion, sweeping Southern Utah with scores of 7-0 and 5-0. The pair of wins over the Thunderbirds marked first-year head coach
Ric Mortera's first victories at the helm of the program.
"I'm really excited for the girls," said Mortera on the opening day. "They all worked so hard this fall, especially with our new regime coming in with the adjustments they made. The way that they were just able to execute today makes me so much more excited for the rest of the season."
Mortera continued, "I'm excited for our new coaching staff too after our first match together. We're definitely going to take a lot of positives out of this, but we definitely have a lot to learn from and some things to adjust. We're really looking to make those changes and get better for the future."
The first match of the day came Saturday morning, as the Utes started out strong in doubles. On court number two,
Madeline Lamoreaux and
Emily Dush picked up a quick victory against Daniela Cozzi and Zoe Tanti, downing the duo with a score of 6-2. To seal the doubles point, Utah's top duo and 24th-nationally ranked doubles team of
Whitney Hekking and
Madison Tattini were able to knock off Chloe Purkiss and Jessica Stefan, 6-2. Utah earned the sweep in doubles following the 6-4 win from
Anya Lamoreaux and
Katya Hersh in the No. 3 slot.
In singles action, Tattini,
Madeline Lamoreaux, Hekking, and
Anya Lamoreaux all picked up straight-set victories of their own to leave the Thunderbirds without a point on the board.
Katya Hersh was able to mount a comeback victory at the number 5 spot, falling 0-6 in the first set, and then coming back with a dominant 6-0, 6-1, performance to card the win. Going for the 7-0 sweep,
Emily Dush fell behind early in the first set on the number three court, with a score of 5-7, but then was able to rally back 6-0, 6-2, to take the victory.
Later in the day for the second half of the doubleheader, Hekking and Tattini kept things rolling with another dominant victory on court one, topping Purkiss and Stefan 6-1. To then take the doubles point at the number three spot,
Anya Lamoreaux and Hersh beat out Alex Ngo and Paula Tascon for the second time on the day with a final score of 6-3.
The Utes picked up where the left off in singles action from the morning, beginning with Tattini putting together a quick 6-1, 6-0, victory at the number one spot against Zoe Tanti. Hekking followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-1, win of her own on the No. 3 court against Purkiss. To end the day and complete the victory for the Utes,
Madeline Lamoreaux added a 6-4, 6-2, win at the number two position against Tanti. Shortly after, she was followed by her sister
Anya Lamoreaux on the number six court, as she downed Tascon 6-2, 6-0, to complete the 5-0 sweep.
The Utah women's tennis team will be back in action next week, traveling to Missoula, Mont. The Utes are set to take on Montana for two matches on Friday, Jan. 17, followed by a match against Minnesota on Saturday, Jan. 19, to finish out the weekend.
