BOISE, Idaho – Alexis Rushlow's first goal as a Ute was the winner as Utah Soccer saw off Boise State in double overtime Sunday afternoon, 1-0.
After a foul was called on the edge of the penalty area in the second half of extra time, Rushlow stepped up and smashed her try into the top right corner off the hands of Boise State keeper Sydney Smith.
"We set up a three-person screen and I was supposed to hit the ball in the gap," Rushlow said. "We worked on it in practice yesterday. Their keeper was making saves and stopped me a couple times earlier in the game so I feel really good about it. It was a tough result Friday night and I am so proud because everyone worked hard and put in an effort to get the win."
"I thought the players that came off the bench gave us a boost with their energy and turned in solid performances," head coach
Rich Manning said. "
Payton McBride,
Brooklyn James, Alexis and
Natalie Kump in particular.
Kristin Fairbairn was awesome and probably had her best game as a Ute."
McBride, a star at Borah High School in Boise, played a career-high 73 minutes after entering the contest with just 79 played all season.
"I had a lot of friends and family here so the support was awesome," McBride said. "To get a win over Boise State was huge and today helped so much in terms of gaining experience. I think we really showed our heart and energy in being able to turn it around."
Utah did not register its first shot until the 24
th minute as
Hailey Stodden put one on frame.
Ali Schinko also had a look at goal but the most menacing Ute in the first 45 minutes was
Holly Daugirda. The senior forced a pair of saves and registered three shots as the game entered halftime without a score.
The second half was all Utah. Rushlow's first free kick attempt was denied by Smith and
Payton McBride forced another save two minutes later. Fairbairn and Rushlow missed chances wide before Stodden had another effort saved entering the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Kump missed a chance before Utah really ratcheted up the intensity on goal.
Ireland Dunn had an effort tipped over the crossbar and
Jessica Hixson's powerful free kick was knocked away for another Utah corner. The closest call came in the dying moments as Fairbairn wriggled free in the penalty area before unleashing a try that bounced off the keeper and then the crossbar.
Rushlow came close to ending the match as overtime got underway and Kump sent another shot right at Smith in the 94
th minute. With 11 seconds left in the first OT period,
Tavia Leachman's header sailed just wide from a corner try.
Counting the second half and overtime periods, Utah out-shot Boise State, 14-4 with seven shots on goal opposed to one. The Utes also racked up an impressive 13 corners.
"In both games this weekend, our attack improved," Manning stated. "We were aggressive going forward and working combinations well. It was big, in terms of our development going forward."
At the other end,
Carly Nelson made five saves for her third shutout of the season and 16
th of her career. Boise State entered the contest unbeaten and had scored 11 goals in its four matches.
"Defensively, we did a nice job against their dynamic forwards," Manning said. "The back four stayed in the game mentally and were ready for the counter when it happened."
The Utes are now unbeaten in eight contests against the Broncos (6-0-2). Utah is 89-27-13 against teams from the Mountain West Conference, where it played from 1999-2011, with a 42-19-7 away from home.
Utah remains on the road next weekend for a contest at Nevada. Kick-off is scheduled for Friday evening at 6:30 p.m.
