CORAL GABLES, Fla. –The University of Utah women's tennis team closed out the final day of action earlier today at the Miami Fall Invite. Due to severe weather, yesterday's second day of tournament play action was cancelled. Florida Gulf Coast elected to leave Saturday night due to weather concerns, leaving the invite with seven fewer players and four fewer doubles players. Only four doubles and 10 singles matches were scheduled today, and all matches were considered as non-draw matches.
"It felt good to finally get some tournament competition in after summer break," said head coach
Ric Mortera. "Overall, I was pleased with how the ladies competed and how they responded to the adjustments we were making throughout the weekend. We definitely have a lot to work on, but I saw a lot of things to be encouraged about. I was especially impressed with Maddie Lamoreaux and seeing her go undefeated in her first tournament as a Ute. I am looking forward to how she continues to develop."
The No. 55-ranked duo of
Whitney Hekking and
Madison Tattini were the only Utah doubles team to compete today. The duo fell short to Miami's Yuno Ito and Lucia Marzal with a score of 5-7.
All three Utes who competed in singles matches today were able to pick up victories.
Madeline Lamoreaux, who picked up two singles wins today, was able to go undefeated in both singles and doubles this weekend.
Today, Lamoreaux faced off against Andreea Stanescu from Georgia State to finish their match that had started Friday but was cut short due to the rain. Lamoreaux picked up the win in a competitive three-set match, with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-6). Lamoreaux closed out the day against Miami's Nada Dimovska and tallied a straight-set win, 6-1, 6-3.
Hekking also added a victory of her own, cruising past Georgia State's Damira Muminovic, 6-3, 6-4. Tattini was also successful in her final day of singles action at the invite, knocking off Angel Carney from Georgia State, with a final score of 6-3, 6-4.
The University of Utah women's tennis team will be back in action next week, as they will travel to San Diego, Calif., to take part in the SDSU Fall Classic. This tournament will be held at San Diego State University, with competition taking place from Friday through Sunday, Sept. 27-29.
