DES MOINES, Iowa – The Utah track and field team opened up competition at the Drake Relays on Thursday with freshman
Scarlet Dale capturing the event title in the 1,500-meter unseeded race and two others finishing inside of the top-10.
Dale earned the first-place overall finish crossing the line in a new personal-best time of 4:28.29, just barely beating her previous record of 4:28.73. Sophomores
Bella Williams and
Trina Moreno finished alongside each other earning seventh and eighth-place, respectively. Williams finished in a new PR time of 4:32.02 while Moreno finished in a time of 4:33.07.
"I thought Bella and Scarlet did a nice job of being patient on the opening lap and then inserting some pace into the race after that," head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "Their finishes are still a bit of a work in progress but that's why we run these races and as always we are happy to get the win and compete well here at the Drake Relays."
Senior
Megan Killian and freshman
Kennedy Powell rounded out the competitors running in the 1,500-meter unseeded race for the Utes. Killian finished in 13th in a time of 4:33.82 while Powell paced in with a time of 4:36.16 to earn 17th.
"We will get back at it tomorrow with the relay races which should be very exciting and against some great competition," Kepler said.
Utah will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Drake Relays with competition slated to begin at 8:50 a.m. CDT (7:50 a.m. MDT) with the women's 4x800-meter relay.
