SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah men's tennis team is set to head to the Midwest for a pair of matches, taking on Miami and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa Saturday and Sunday.Â
The Utes get started with the Hurricanes on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. followed by its Sunday morning dual against Iowa at 10 a.m. MT. This will be Utah's first matches against Miami and Iowa under the direction of head coach
Roeland Brateanu and their second match of the season against an ACC opponent. It is also the first time the Utes have taken on a Big 10 opponent in regular season play since 2017 when they matched up against No. 3 Ohio State.Â
The Utes are coming off a double-header victory over Northern Arizona on Feb. 6, defeating the Lumberjacks 6-1 and 5-2 to improve to 5-2 overall this season.Â
The doubles teams of
Slava Shainyan and
David Micevski on the No. 2 court and
Dan Little and
Azat Hankuliyev on the No. 3 court were victorious on the day with both teams going 2-0 against the Lumberjacks.Â
In singles play, Shainyan was unstoppable on the No. 3 court, coming away with tough wins against Thomas Fisher and Chris Steele. He first took down Fisher with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 win and then once again came away victorious against Steele that evening at 7-6, 4-6, 10-7.Â
Russell Benkaim also won both his matches on the No. 4 court with
Joe Woolley winning on the No. 5 court against Facundo Tumosa in the morning and
Mathias Gavelin claiming a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tumosa in the second dual of the day.Â
After this week's road trip, the Utes will be back in the Eccles Tennis Center for eight straight matches, including the opening of Pac-12 play against UCLA and USC on March 8 and March 9.Â
