SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's tennis team is set to travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. this week as they participate in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, hosted by North Carolina. The Utes get the tournament started against the Tarheels on Friday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. MT.
The ITA Kickoff Weekend features four teams with Utah, North Carolina, Middle Tennessee and Duke all taking part in the event.

Following their match against the Tarheels on Friday, the Utes will either play Middle Tennessee or Duke in the championship match or consolation match on Saturday, Jan. 26. A full set of results and a recap will be available after each match on UtahUtes.com.
The Utes are coming off a strong weekend of play, hosting two matches this past Saturday. Utah finished the weekend 2-0, defeating Weber State 6-1 and Montana State 7-0 to improve to 2-1 on the season.
In doubles play, the team of
Russell Benkaim and
Randy Cory won both of their matches, defeating Weber State's and Montana State's No. 1 doubles teams 6-3 and 6-4, respectively. Benkaim also got things done in singles play, winning his match on the No. 3 court against Montana State (6-4, 6-3) and on the No. 4 court against WSU (6-0, 6-1).
Slava Shainyan had a strong day at the No. 2 position, posting a 6-1, 6-2 win against Michiel Van Schoor of Weber State, followed by a tough 6-4, 7-5 victory over Alexander Flink of MSU. He also finished the weekend undefeated in doubles, pairing up with
Joe Woolley against Weber State and
David Micevski against Montana State.
Mathias Gavelin,
Azat Hankuliyev,
Dan Little, Wicevski and Woolley all claimed their first singles wins of the season against Weber State and Montana State as well, highlighted by Gavelin. He picked up his first collegiate wins, beating Nick Werner of Weber State (6-4, 6-1) at the No. 5 court and Christian Damgaard Qvist of Montana State on the No. 4 court.
