SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Soccer saw an early lead slip away in a 2-1 loss to Oklahoma on Thursday evening.
The Utes took the advantage just two minutes into the contest as Paola van der
Veen converted a penalty kick. It was the senior midfielder's fourth goal of the season and
14th of her career.
Utah had chances to double the lead as Hailey
Skolmoski stung McKinley Crone with a close attempt and
Haylee Cacciacarne headed a corner right to the OU keeper.
The Sooners pulled even in the
17th minute as Hailey Davidson scored her fourth of the year. Utah tried to clear the ball out of its offensive zone and Paige Welch sent the ball back in for Davidson to slide past
Carly Nelson.
Oklahoma never really threatened for the remainder of the half and Natalie
Kump had the only try for Utah. The junior dribbled through the midfield and saw her attempt sail to Crone.
In the second stanza, Anna
Escobedo had the first look at goal, but Crone was up to the task. At the other end, Nelson denied
Ivanna Rivas to keep the match tied.
Oklahoma went back in front during the
72nd minute as Olivia Smith popped a cross in from the right sideline. As the ball hung in the air, Megan Reilly
leapt and was able to head in at the far post for the deciding goal.
Utah piled on the pressure for the final 10 minutes as Van der Veen had a free kick blocked and Crone stopped her ensuing rebound.
Skolmoski tried desperately to get on the end of a try but could only flip it high and wide in the final seconds.
