SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah track and field team begins preparations for the Pac-12 Championships this weekend as several student-athletes will compete at the Weber State Open on Wednesday, May 2, and the Sacramento State Open on Saturday, May 5.
Athletes competing are mostly running the shorter distances.
Senior
Alissa Atisme is one of Utah's top athletes competing this week, in the 400 meters at Weber State. Her career-best time in the event (54.69) ranks third all-time at Utah. Freshmen
Rachel Whipple and
Ruby Jane Mathewson have been strong in the 400 hurdles this year, ranking 24th and 25
th respectively in the Pac-12 in the event. Whipple's season-best time is 1:03.09 while Mathewson's is 1:03.76. Sophomore
Brooke Martin will also compete in the 400 hurdles as well as the 200.
Regan Crofts will compete in the javelin. She has a season-best mark of 121'1.5" (36.92m).
At Sacramento State on Saturday, freshman
Jackie Martin will race in the 200 and 400. Her season-best 200 time of 25.06 ranks in the top 10 all-time at Utah. Senior
Mesa Weidle, who earned Pac-12 Athlete of the Week honors earlier this year, will also compete in the 200 and 400. Senior
Grace Englund has a season-best 800 time of 2:09.94 and freshman
Whitney Hessler will also compete in the 800. Junior
Eliza Hansen's season-best high jump mark of 5'5" (1.65m) ranks 17
th in the Pac-12.
