Utes Drop Match to No. 34 Arizona State

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis team fell short today against the No. 34 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils, with a final score of 4-1. With this loss, the Utes move to an overall record of 7-5 on the season.
It was a tough one to lose today, because I felt like we got the start that we needed in order to win the match," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I felt like we put ourselves in a position to win in four first sets and only came away with two of them, that killed our momentum. I'm disappointed but I'm very optimistic because we put ourselves in a position to beat a very good team. I think that we can learn a lot from this and evolve."
The Utes earned an early advantage by taking the double's point over Arizona State. Brianna Chisholm and Victoria Robertson started things off with a win on the No. 3 court, defeating the No. 37 ranked doubles pair of Sasa Klanecek and Savannah Slaysman with a score of 6-3. Alexia Petrovic and Jena Cheng then sealed the point at the No. 1 spot over the No. 58 ranked doubles pair of Nicole Fossa Huergo and Tereza Kolarova with a final score of 6-3.
In singles, the Sun Devils were able to make a comeback to top the Utah women's tennis team. At the No. 2 position, Ilze Hattingh defeated Brianna Chisholm with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Savannah Slaysman was then able to notch a victory against Taylor Calton at the No. 4 spot, scoring 7-5, 6-2. The on the No. 5 court, Sasa Klanececk topped Whitney Turley 7-5, 6-2, to give the Sun Devils a 3-1 lead. The final point came at the No. 3 position as Nicole Fossa Huergo was able to outlast Jena Cheng in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, to give ASU the victory.
The University of Utah women's tennis team will be back in action on Sunday, as they will finish their weekend up with a match against the University of Arizona. Play will be held at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center with the match set to start at 11 a.m.
