Utes Earn First Conference Victory Against Arizona

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis team earned their first conference win of the season earlier today against Arizona, defeating the Wildcats with a score of 5-2. With this win the Utes move to an overall record of 8-5, with a record of 1-1 in Pac-12 play.

"It was a hard-fought win over a Pac-12 opponent," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "In this league, every win is significant. This sets us up and puts us in a good position for our matches coming up this week."

The Utes started the day off by earning the doubles point against Arizona. Brianna Chisholm and Victoria Robertson recorded the first victory, edging out Gitte Heynemans and Sophia Thomas with a score of 7-5 on the No. 3 court. Alexia Petrovic and Jena Cheng then finished things off with a win at the No. 1 spot, defeating Arizona's Mary Lewis and Marie Van Aelst with a final score of 6-4.

In singles, Taylor Calton got things started on the No. 4 court against Gitte Heynemans, earning the victory for the Utes with a score of 6-2, 6-0. Victoria Robertson then pitched in a win of her own at the No. 6 position over Sophia Thomas, scoring 6-1, 6-2. Whitney Turley then followed with a victory at the No. 5 spot, defeating Arizona's Talya Zandberg with a score of 6-4, 6-2, to seal the win over the Wildcats for the Utes. Alexia Petrovic recorded the final win of the day for the Utah women's tennis team, defeating Mary Lewis in a very competitive match at the No. 1 spot, scoring 7-5, 6-4.

The Utes will be back in action this week for three matches on the road. They will first pay a visit to UC Davis on March 15^th, followed by two Pac-12 matches against Stanford on March 16^th and California on March 17^th.
