SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Utah men's golf team is in fifth place following the first round and most of the second round at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate. The second round of action at Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course was suspended due to darkness and will resume Sunday morning in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Utah registered 6-under par (282) in the first round on Monday and is currently 11-over par in the second round with Ute golfers through holes 14 to 17. The Utes will resume the second round with a combined score of 5-over par.
"We need to finish off a lot better tomorrow," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "Blake had a very good day. We are only seven strokes out of second place so a good round tomorrow can go a long way. We need to compete to the end!"
Kansas currently leads the field shooting a combined 12-under par. St. Mary's (-2) sits in second place, Purdue (-1) is currently in third, while Michigan (E) rounds out the teams ahead of the Utes in fourth place. Pac-12 foes Washington State (+13) and Oregon State (+19) sit behind Utah in sixth and seventh places, respectively.
Freshman
Blake Tomlinson picked up where he left off last week and posted a first-round score of 8-under par, which ties the lowest score under par all-time. The freshman's round of 64 in Saturday's first round also ranks tied for the second-lowest round in school history with teammate
Kyler Dunkle, who notched 64 earlier this year at the Mark Simpson Invitational, and former Ute
Dustin Pimm, who registered a round of 64 twice in his career.
Tomlinson is 1-over par through 17 holes of the second round to lead the field of 69 participants with a combined score of 7-under par.
Fellow freshman
Tristan Mandur shot 1-over par (73) in the first round and is 3-under par through 14 holes in the second round. Mandur heads into Sunday in a tie for 10
th place with a combined score of 2-under par.
Junior
Nathan Wunderli notched 2-under par (70) during the first round of action and is currently 6-over par through 15 holes of the second round. Wunderli is currently in a tie for 23
rd place at a combined score of 4-over par.
Junior
Kyler Dunkle is currently in a tie for 45
th place with a combined score of 10-over par. Dunkle finished the first round with a score of 3-over par (75) and is 7-over par through 15 holes of the second round. Sophomore
Jordan Costello rounded out the Utes on Saturday and currently sits in a tie for 52
nd place with a score of 12-over par. Costello shot 5-over par (77) in the first round and is 7-over par through 16 holes of the second round.
The second round of play is scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. MST on Sunday morning, with the final round of play to follow with the same pairings as rounds 1 and 2. Live results can be found on GolfStat.com.
