Utes Fall Short in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Utah women's tennis team suffered a loss earlier today, as they fell to the University of New Mexico with a final score of 4-2. With this loss, the Utes now have an overall record of 7-4 on the season.

"We got beat by an inspired team playing on their home court, we will work to bounce back from this," said head coach Mat Iandolo.

In doubles, the UNM Lobos took the early advantage as they earned the doubles point over the Utes. Bronte Burgette and Diana Wong were victorious at the No. 2 spot over Alexia Petrovic and Jena Cheng, with a score of 6-3. Whitney Turley and Taylor Calton then lost a competitive match at the No. 3 spot to Natasha Munday and Lauren Rich, with a final score of 7-5.

Later in singles, Brianna Chisholm and Jena Cheng were the sole Utes to get victories. At the No. 2 spot, Chisholm topped Danielle Quevedo after dropping the first set, to come back and win with a score of 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. On the No. 4 court, Cheng also came back from one set down defeating Bronte Murgett with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The University of Utah's women tennis team will be back in action next week, as they will begin Pac-12 play. The Utes will face off against Arizona State on March 9th at 1:30 p.m., followed by a match against the University of Arizona on March 11th at 11 a.m. Both matches will be held at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
