LIHUE, Hawaii – The Utah men's golf team is in a tie for fifth place following the first round of play at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which is being held at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii.
Utah carded a first-round score of 3-under par (285) at the par-72, 6,991-yard course on Thursday to open the event. UNLV (-18) led all teams to sit in first place, while Texas A&M (-5) is in second place, and North Carolina (-4) and BYU (-4) are tied for third place. St. Mary's (-3) also is in a tie with the Utes for fifth place in the 20-team field.
"We got off to a horrendous start today and really struggled early," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "Our guys came back and started playing really well over the last six to seven holes to get ourselves back into it. They did a great job of turning it around and overall just ended the day really well."
Junior
Nathan Wunderli led the Ute squad on the first day of action, registering a score of 2-under par (70) to currently sit in a tie for 14
th place. Wunderli notched three birdies on the day while carding only one bogey in the entire round.
Along with Wunderli, sophomore
Jordan Costello and freshman
Tristan Mandur notched sub-par rounds after registering first-round scores of 1-under par (71). Costello and Mandur head into the second round of play in a tie for 18
th place.
Freshman
Blake Tomlinson recorded 1-over par (73) in the first round to sit in a tie for 34
th place. Rounding out the Utah golfers on the first day, sophomore
Peyton Hastings carded 4-over par (76) to sit in a tie for 69
th overall.
