SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a rough start against Long Beach State on Friday night in the Jon M. Huntsman Center, the Utah women's basketball team pulled away for an 82-59 win, improving to 3-0 on the season.
"Long Beach State came in here and played really competitive and fearless," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "They hit 10 threes and shot the ball incredibly well in the first half. Defensively I didn't think we were bad, I just think we had a few miscommunications and they made us pay. Offensively, we kind of sputtered. We had some great moments and some not so great moments, but we won by 23 and anytime you can do that it is good."
Once again, the Utes had multiple players reach double digits, including
Megan Huff who has had back-to-back 20-point games. She finished with 22 points and six rebounds, shooting 67-percent from the floor.
Dre'Una Edwards put up 13 points and six rebounds with
Daneesha Provo also scoring 12.
Niyah Becker rounded out Utah's double-digit scorers with her 11 points, chipping in five rebounds while shooting 50-percent from the field.
From the point,
Erika Bean turned in a complete game for the Utes, putting up five points, six rebounds, a team-high eight assists and three steals.
Dru Gylten also added seven assists and nine points.
"I thought Erika had a really good game," Roberts said. "When she was pushing tempo, we were really good. Having both Bean and Dru on the court at the same time is pretty tough."
It was a quick start to the first quarter thanks to Huff and Provo scoring the first 10 points for the Utes, giving them a 10-3 lead with 7:50 on the clock. But like Roberts said, the Utes offense sputtered, allowing Long Beach State to go on a 15-2 run and take a 20-16 lead with less than two minutes to go in the quarter.
The Beach shot 78-percent from the three in the first half, including going 3-for-4 in the second quarter. Even with some hot shooting from LBSU, the Utes were able to settle in and go on a 9-2 run to regain a 32-27 lead with 3:11 to go in the second quarter.
The Utes held a 42-35 lead heading into the third quarter after outscoring the Beach 24-15 in the second. Long Beach State scored at the 5:33 mark in the third quarter, but wouldn't score again until there were 23 seconds remaining, allowing Utah to go on a 12-0 run that included points from Provo, Huff, Edwards and
Sarah Porter.
Utah was able to give key minutes to the bench in the fourth quarter after jumping to a 34-point lead with 6:10 left to play. Even with an 11-0 run by the Beach late in the game, the Utes were able to keep its composure and finish with the 82-59 victory.
Utah returns to action on Monday, Nov. 19 when they host Idaho State. The game is set for a 7 p.m. MT tip and will be streamed on UtahUtes.com.
