SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – This weekend
, the Utah men's tennis team will make a road trip to southern California, as the Utes are matched up against UCLA (14-4) and USC (20-4).
On Friday, the Utes will match up with the 10
th ranked team in the nation, UCLA. The match against the Bruins is set to start at 4:00 p.m. MST, at the Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts in Los Angeles California. Last year, the Utes carded a 0-4 Loss against UCLA in Salt Lake City. Then on Saturday, the Utes are set to match up against the 5
th ranked team in the nation, USC. Play against the Trojans is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. MST, with the match being held at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Last season against USC, the Utes lost 1-4, but the Utah men's tennis team is coming off an exciting win against Washington, and is looking to improve their conference record of 1-3, against UCLA and USC.
Utah Notes
This past weekend, Utah was able to card their first PAC-12 conference win, defeating Washington with a final score of 4-2. In doubles, Washington went up early, earning the doubles point to go up 1-0 on the Utes.
David Micevski and
Egbert Weverink were defeated quickly by Jake Douglas and Piers Foley at the No. 1 position, 6-2.
Santiago Sierra and
Joe Woolley then tied things up on court 3, by defeating Gal Hakak and Amit Batta with a final score of 6-3. Then in the point-deciding match,
Dan Little and
Slava Shainyan lost a very competitive match against Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer 6-3, at the No. 2 spot.
David Micevski and
Dan Little cruised to quick victories in singles play, with Micevski defeating Mitch Stewart at the No. 1 position 6-3, 6-1, and Little defeating Enzo Sommer 6-4, 6-2, on the No. 2 court.
Parker McGuiness then gave the Utes a 3-1 lead by defeating Amit Batta at the No. 5 spot, with a final score of 7-5, 6-1. Then to finish things out for the Utes and give them their first conference win,
Slava Shainyan battled for a victory at the No. 4 position against Gal Hakak with a final score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
Opponent Notes
The UCLA Bruins have won six matches in a row, and currently sit at the top of the PAC-12. Their most recent victory came against the 19
th ranked Stanford Cardinal, with a final score of 4-2. In a battle of teams riding five-match winnings streaks, the No. 10 UCLA men's tennis team rallied from a 2-0 deficit Sunday to defeat Stanford. The win marked the second of the season for the Bruins over the Cardinal, and the first in conference play. The win puts UCLA all alone atop the Pac-12 standings with a 3-0 record.
The No. 5 USC men's tennis team rebounded from a rough start to its Bay Area road trip by serving up a strong 4-0 win over No. 12 California today in Berkeley. The Trojans had stumbled to a Pac-12 loss in Saturday's matchup at Stanford, but dug in their heels to get back in winning gear on a solid effort against the Golden Bears. USC was able to get its 20
th win of the year with this victory, improving to 20-4 overall and now 3-1 in Pac-12 play.
