GIRDWOOD, Alaska and JACKSON, N.H. – Utah skiers
Julie Mohagen and
Endre Bjertness each had pair of podium finishes in the slalom races to lead the Utes in Alaska at the Seawolf and UAA Invitationals on Friday afternoon. The Utes stand second at the Seawolf Invitational through the alpine races while the Utes are third through the slalom races at the UAA Invitational.
In Nordic, the Utes used the off weekend from RMISA racing to head east for the University of New Hampshire Carnival, coming away with a pair of wins and four total podium spots in today's classic races. The races do not count towards the skiers regular season results.
Mohagen finished on the podium in both women's races, placing second in the Seawolf Invite slalom and third in the UAA Invite race. Also finishing strong in both races was
Sabine Krautgasser who earned her first career top five in the Seawolf slalom while finishing seventh in the UAA Invite slalom.
The Ute women had the most points in the Seawolf slalom with
Abby Ghent also finishing in the top 10 with a 10
th-place run.
Lauren Samuels placed 14
th while
Roni Remme and
Chloe Fausa did not finish their first runs.
Behind Mohagen and Krautgasser in the UAA Invite women's slalom, Remme placed 13
th with Samuels 15
th. Ghent placed 24
th while Fausa did not finish her second run.
For the men, Bjertness earned his first podium finishes of the season with third-place finishes in both races. In the Seawolf Invite race,
Sasha Zaitsoff placed 12
th with
Joergen Brath 13
th followed by
Martin Grasic in 15
th,
Sam Dupratt in 16
th and
Dominic Demschar in 22
nd.
Ty Sprock did not finish his first run. During the UAA Invite slalom, Brath placed 10
th for his second top-10 finish of the season while Sprock was 15
th. Demschar finished 17
th with Grasic 20
th and Dupratt 22
nd. Zaitsoff did not finish his second run.
Utah is second in the Seawolf Invite after the alpine races with 311 points, trailing Montana State (333). Denver is third (283) with Colorado fourth (274). After the slalom races of the UAA Invite, Utah has 148 points for third, trailing New Mexico (168) and Denver (159) with Montana State (134) in fourth.
In Nordic in the men's 10-km classic,
Martin Bergström won the race with
Martin Mikkelsen in second.
Kevin Bolger also earned a top-10 finish with a sixth-place run.
Oscar Ivars placed 18th. In the women's 5-km race,
Guro Jordheim placed first with
Merete Myrseth in third and
Leah Lange in fifth.
Natalia Müller finished ninth to put all of the Utes in the top 10.
New Hampshire hosts the 2017 NCAA Championships, giving the Utes a chance to check out the trails that will be used for the competition, as well as see how they stack up against skiers from the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA).
