MORAGA, Calif. – The University of Utah women's basketball team defeated Charlotte 81-68 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Hilton Concord Classic on the campus of Saint Mary's College.
Sophomore guard
Erika Bean paced the game for the Utes with 11 rebounds, nine assists, seven points, three steals and two blocks. Junior forward
Emily Potter scored 22 points while pulling down eight rebounds.
"We scored when we needed to," head coach
Lynne Roberts said about her undefeated team. "
Erika Bean had a great game, and as a sophomore she really showed up for us today.
Emily Potter scored for us. It's hard for a defense to focus on everyone else when Potter is out there."
Sophomore wing
Daneesha Provo scored 14 points while junior wing
Malia Nawahine scored 13 points.
Both teams struggled to control the ball early, but the Utes (4-0, 0-0 Pac-12) were able to recover. Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair intercepted an inbound play from Charlotte (3-2, 0-0 C-USA), taking the ball to the basket for a layup and a 20-12 lead. Bean's defensive effort gave the Ute's the possession with 12 second to play and drew a foul to extend to a 21-14 lead before the end of the first quarter.
Utah pulled ahead by 10 in the second quarter, but the 49ers climbed their way within five points with 3 minutes to play in the first half. The Utes pulled out a 10-run including back-to-back 3-pointers for their largest lead of the game leading 47-32 before the half.
Utah struggled from the floor in the third quarter shooting 38.5 percent, as the 49ers outscored the Utes 17-14. The Utes recovered in the fourth quarter shooting 52.9 percent from the floor to claim their fourth consecutive victory to open the season.
Utah returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. MT against host team St. Mary's at McKeon Pavilion. The Utes lead the all-time battle against the Gaels 6-0.
