SALT LAKE CITY - Utah soccer fell in its annual rivalry game this evening to Utah State, 2-0. The Utes dropped to 3-3-2 on the season.
"I think we played with intensity and i'm not upset with the effort by our team today," head coach Rich Manning said. "That first goal punctured us and we didn't do too much the rest of the half. Prior to that and then again in the second half, I thought we had some great chances to get on the board."
"I just think we have to remain calm and stay patient in front of goal," Taylor Slattery stated. "We just need to capitalize on the chances we are creating. I'm proud of the way we played until the final whistle. We never gave up."
Utah got on the front foot with eight of the first nine chances of the contest. USU goalkeeper Jeannie Woller was up to the challenge, stopping Paola van der Veen, Kaycee Buckley, Baylee Nielsen and Eden Jacobsen. Utah's second shot was a blistering effort from Mariah Elmer that struck the crossbar in the 10th minute.
Utah State would get the first goal in the 34th minute when Wesley Hamblin raced to the end line and got around a Utah defender. She slid a ball across the face of the goal and an on-rushing Katie Flynn knocked it home for 1-0 lead.
Utah continued to press with Megan Trabert, Max Flom and Slattery all working chances against the USU defense. The Utes took a collective sigh of relief when Jordyn Chung-Hoon's effort nicked the crossbar and Lindsey Luke collected the ensuing header from Bailee Hammond.
After halftime, Utah attacked in search of the equalizer. The Utes earned three corner-kicks in the first seven minutes, resulting in five shots, three of which were saved by Woller. The Utah defense was quick to deal with the Aggie counter attack as Luke made three saves during a 10-minute span to keep her team in the match.
Woller continued to impress in the Utah State goal, making saves on Trabert, Van der Veen and Buckley over the next five minutes. The visitors got a second goal as Jessica Brooksby tapped home her seventh of the season after Luke had to come out and parry away a cross from Flynn.
Utah finished with a large advantage in shots, 27-13, and limited Utah State to only one corner kick. However, Woller finished with 11 saves to notch the shutout and frustrate the Utes.
