SALT LAKE CITY -- Redshirt sophomore forward Emily Potter set a career-high with seven blocks and equaled her career best with 18 points off an 8-of-9 shooting night to give the University of Utah women's basketball team a 71-67 win over Lamar on Tuesday in the Huntsman Center.
Utah is off to its first 2-0 start since 2012-13 after holding Lamar to 30.4% shooting (21-69), while hitting 49.0% (24-49) from the field. The Utes also held a 44-36 edge in rebounding.
"We did a great job defensively," Utah Head Coach Lynne Roberts said. "Up until that last five to six minutes, we did well. When a team shoots 30%, you definitely should win. It was close because of our turnovers and giving them opportunities on the offensive board. In terms of the process, I tell the team, let's get better every day and we did, but we had a little lapse and that's just part of the process."
Seventeen of Utah's 24 field goals were assisted and Utah buried 21 of 23 free throws for a 91.3% clip.
"It's great and we always say it's okay to make the extra pass," senior point guard Danielle Rodriguez said. "When I make a pass to Paige [Crozon], I know she can hit the shot and that's why I'm making the extra pass. Overall, we are starting to gel because we are sharing the ball and not being selfish. We are unselfish and that will create shots for everyone. We are communicating better on defense and we are moving better as one."
Potter tied career high with 18 points and set a career-high with seven blocks. She shot 88.9% from the floor to go with eight boards.
Sophomore wing Tanaeya Boclair registered 12 points, including a 5-for-5 night from the free throw line, to go with six rebounds and three assists.
Rodriguez dished out a team-high six assists. She also scored eight points, including a 6-for-8 night at the free throw line, to go with six rebounds.
Crozon equaled her career high for the second straight game with eight rebounds. She also scored eight points (4-for-4 from the free throw line) and registered an assist and a block.
Redshirt sophomore Malia Nawahine scored nine points to go with three boards as well as a pair of assists and a block.
Sophomore Gabrielle Bowie scored the first points of her career and ended with six on the night after a 3-for-3 night shooting from the floor. She also grabbed a rebound and had an assist.
Sophomore forward Joeseta Fatuesi hauled in five rebounds and hit both of her shots from the floor for four points.
Utah scored the first six points of the contest and led by as many as 10 (16-6) and ended the first quarter with a 16-9 after the first quarter. The Utes out-shot the Cardinals 43.8% (7-16) to 17.6% (3-17) as Potter poured in six points and Boclair and Crozon grabbed three rebounds apiece.
The Utes extended their lead to as many as 19 in the second quarter (38-19) and took a 38-21 lead into halftime. Utah 56.0 (14-25) from the field and the Utes 10-of-10 from the foul line, while holding Lamar to 19.4% shooting (7-36). Potter 10 points to go with five boards in the first two quarters.
Utah's momentum carried over into the second half as it lead expanded to 32 (54-22) midway through the third quarter. The Cardinals fought back within 20 (54-34), but the Utes stretched back to a 25-point lead at the end of the third, 65-40.
In the fourth quarter, Lamar countered with a 21-4 run to come back within 8 (69-61) with two minutes remaining before the Utes came away with the 71-67 victory.
"I wish we would've played well in the fourth quarter," Roberts said. "We scored a lot in the first three. I wish we could've finished strong because the last quarter always leaves the taste in your mouth. We are sharing the ball well with 17 assists, which is really good. There were a couple of turnovers which we can fix. Offensively, we are improving a little bit."
"For three quarters of the game I feel like we came up strong and stuck to the game plan," Crozon said. "We could've done it a little bit better, but for the most part, I feel like we did a good job up until the fourth quarter."
Lamar (0-2) was led by a game-high 21 points from Chastadie Barrs, while Kiara Desamours had a team-high eight rebounds.
The Utes finish their three-game, season-opening home stand Friday against George Mason at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be streamed live at pac-12.com and the radio call will be on ESPN 700.
