This Weekend's Action
Utah soccer (7-0-3) embarks on its first road trip in Pac-12 play with a visit to Los Angeles this weekend. The Utes play at No. 1 UCLA on Friday night before taking on No. 23 USC Sunday afternoon. Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks
Utah Draws With No. 4 Stanford
Utah soccer remained unbeaten with a pulsating 1-1 draw against No. 4 Stanford on Friday. The Utes extended their unbeaten streak at home to 18 games in the conference opener against the Cardinal.
The visitors grabbed an early lead but Mariah Elmer's third goal of the season evened things just two minutes into the second half. Katie Rigby won a ball in the midfield by heading it up to Katie Taylor. The senior then slipped Elmer through with a beautiful pass that the freshman finished off.
Best Start Ever
With no losses in their first 10 matches, the Utes are off to the best start in their program's history. The best record for any Ute team was the 2003 squad that went 16-2-2 en route to an undefeated Mountain West Conference title and a NCAA Tournament berth.
Utes Rising in Rankings
In Tuesday's NSCAA rankings, the Utes ranked 28th in the country, receiving 11 total votes. They are also ranked No. 7 in the Pacific Region.
Five Pac-12 teams are currently ranked in the top-25 with Washington State and the Utes just missing the cut.
The RPI has Utah even higher as the Utes are ranked 21st nationally, third among Pac-12 schools. The league has 10 squads in the top 50.
Utah's highest national ranking comes courtesy of Soccer America, which has the Utes entering at No. 19 in its latest poll.
Utah vs. Top 25
The Utes are 10-43-4 all-time against teams ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 and are winless in their last 11 contests dating back to 2011. Their last victory occurred on Oct. 14, 2011 when they beat No. 18 Oregon State, 1-0 in SLC.
The last Ute win over a top-25 team away from home was the opener to the 2006 season when it topped No. 19 Stanford 2-1 in Santa Clara. The biggest road victory in program history occurred in 2004 when the Utes topped No. 7 UCLA, 2-1
Utah does own two wins against top-five foes in its program's history. The Utes topped No. 4 Portland in the 2002 season opener, Rich Manning's first game as head coach, 2-0 in Salt Lake City. They also defeated No. 2 Florida the following season, 1-0 in SLC
Last season, the Utes played a record five nationally-ranked teams. All five matches were against teams ranked in the top-15 with Utah tying No. 2 UCLA and No. 11 Cal, and losing one-goal games to No. 6 BYU, No. 10 Stanford and No. 13 Texas A&M.
Luke Named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week … Again
Utah soccer goalkeeper Lindsey Luke was named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week for Sept. 22-28. This is the second-straight weekly award for the junior and gives her five conference honors for her career.
Luke made six saves this past weekend as the Utes drew with No. 4 Stanford. Despite not keeping the clean sheet, she has six shutouts this season and 19 for her career.
The NSCAA All-Region selection currently ranks ninth in the nation with a 90.9 save percentage. She also ranks 11th in the nation with a 0.374 goals-against average.
Luke set the Utah single-season shutout mark last season with nine blankings. She finished with a goals-against average of 0.57, 19th in the nation, and her save percentage (.894) ranked fifth nationally.
Utah's Preseason Pac-12 Picks
Along with the returning Luke, three other Utes received preseason honors; Megan Trabert , Ashton Hall and Katie Rigby .
Trabert started every game at center back for Utah last season and had a knack for scoring in big games. She is currently tied for third on the team with two goals this year.
Hall started 16 games for Utah and finished second on the team in scoring with 11 points. She is currently out for the season due to an injury.
Rigby missed almost all of 2012 due to injury but battled back and played in every contest for the Utes in 2013. After scoring the game-winner against Oregon last season, her first collegiate goal, she has two more tallies along with three assists this season. Her seven points rank second on the team.
Taylor's Tenure One for the Books
Katie Taylor, a NSCAA All-Region selection last season has flown under the radar for most of her collegiate career but make no mistake, she has been an integral part to the recent success of Utah soccer.
In this, her senior season, the midfielder currently leads the Utes in assists and points. Her five helpers this season ranks second in the Pac-12 and give her 15 for her career. She needs one more to catch Amy Kofoed (1998-2001) for fifth place all-time in Utah history.
Taylor started every game for the Utes and led the team in goals and points last season, helping them to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 and sixth time overall.
The Davis, Utah native also led the Utes in scoring as a sophomore with four goals and four assists.
Utah's New Class
The Utes added nine newcomers to the team for the 2014 season including six true freshmen; Tamaryn Braun , Madi Clarkson , Mariah Elmer , July Gentry , Janie Kearl and Natalie Vukic .
Utah also brought in three transfers; Mikayla Elmer , Mariah's sister, from Portland, Audrey Gibb from Oregon State and Addie Jensen from Columbia University.
Vukic has started every game for the Utes while the Elmer sisters have appeared in all 10 contests. Gibb missed her first game against UVU due to an injury while Kearl has appeared in eight contests, Jensen has seen action four times and Clarkson twice.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition
UCLA is the reigning national champion and is currently unbeaten this season at 8-0-2. The Bruins drew in their Pac-12 opener at Arizona State and are led offensively by senior Sam Mewis. The midfielder has scored seven goals and is a member of the U.S. National Team pool. Goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland has seven shutouts this season and has only allowed three goals in 10 games.
USC has responded to a poor 2013 season by starting 7-1-2 and trouncing Arizona in the league opener, 3-0. Senior Alex Quincey has scored seven goals to pace the offense after transferring from UC Riverside. Despite playing four different goalkeepers, the top net-minder is Caroline Stanley. The senior has picked up three shutouts and has a 0.73 goals-against average.
Series History
Utah is 2-4 all-time against USC and has never won in Los Angeles. Despite the record, Utah has captured two of the last three meetings between the teams, including a 1-0 win in SLC last season. The last game here resulted in a 1-0 Trojan win despite a dominating second half for Utah (9-2 shot adv.).
The Utes hold a 1-3-1 all-time record against UCLA after a draw against the national champions last season. Ashton Hall opened the scoring as the No. 2 Bruins fell behind for the first time all season. Utah's only win in the series was here in 2004. The last game here at UCLA resulted in a 2-0 win for the home team.
