The Weekend Lineup
Freshman Alexia Petrovic, Jena Cheng and Victoria Robertson and junior transfer Lexi Anista will take the stage for the first times as Utah Utes this weekend. The newcomers will be joined by sophomore Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa, junior Sarah Richter and senior Elena Najera-Salas. Neither Tereza Bekerova or Lucia Koracikova, both seniors, will make the trip.
The Competition
Joining the Utes this weekend in Colorado will be Arkansas, Liberty, New Mexico, Southern Illinois and the hometown Buffs. The Razorbacks claim all of the ITA preseason ranked athletes in this weekend's pool, which include singles No. 121 Shannon Hudson and No. 59 doubles duo Yang Pang and Oleksandra Shkorupeieva. Utah's Bekerova, No. 74 singles, will not compete.
Arkansas (59) and Utah (44) are the only two programs that were ranked in the ITA polls at the end of last season.
A Look Back
The Utes ended their 2013-14 campaign 12-9 in dual matches and took ninth overall at the Pac-12 Conference Championships. Ranked as low as 27th (Mar. 18), the Utes placed 44th in the final rankings with Bekerova boasting a 104 singles rank.
Roster Moves
Primarily due to injuries, only six athletes competed for Utah during the dual-match season and half of the pack returns for 2014. Veteran starters Bekerova, Da Rosa and Richer are rejoined in competition by Najera-Salas and Koracikova who both sat out last season.
Sarah Pham, Callie Craig and Paige Miles were lost to graduation so Utah hopes to fill the holes with four newcomers: freshmen Cheng, Petrovic and Robertson and junior transfer Anista.
Head coach Mat Iandolo returns for his eighth season at the helm of the Utah Women's Tennis program as former Ute All-American Ruth Ann Allen begins her 16th year as a Utah assistant.
Coming Up
After the Colorado Invitational, the Utes head to the ITA All-American tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. Oct. 2-5.
